About John

I am a father with seven children and 25 grandchildren and they have been the focus of my life. I introduced my children to reading at an early age and they all grew up with a love of reading. My youngest daughter earned her Master's Degree in Publishing at Oxford just so she could make books her life's work. When I visit my children they bring their children to me so I can read to them. I love every moment of that. That is the spirit with which I teach, no matter what the subject is.

I have a BSEE degree (Cum Laude) from USC and have more than 50 hours of graduate courses in science, physics, math, chemistry and engineering. I learned German as a foreign exchange student and developed native proficiency at that time.

My Professional life has been primarily in business, with an emphasis on sales and marketing of technology products. I have founded and led several technology companies. I have done business throughout Latin America and learned Spanish by immersion in the business environment.

As an ESL tutor I know how to quickly make you comfortable. I've been there!

I'd like to help you make learning fun again. With the right approach, it can be easy.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 2

I have a BSEE degree, Cum Laude, from the University of Southern California and more than 50 hours of graduate classes in math and science subjects. I know how to make math fun.

Public Speaking

I began my public speaking career reluctantly since I had to overcome my fear of speaking in front of groups. I was selected to be a foreign exchange student to Germany my senior year of high school and had to address large groups there as well as in the U.S. when I returned, in support of the foreign exchange program. Later I took an undergraduate class in Public Speaking and began to build my confidence.

I joined IBM as a sales trainee after receiving my BS degree and I received specialized training in properly structuring my sales presentations, as well as how to confidently present to large groups. At that point I actually began to enjoy the interaction and excitement of engaging an audience.

As a director-level executive in Sprint I received one-on-one training from the man who taught John F. Kennedy the presentation skills he would need to run for President. This included video taping of my presentations and detailed critique of the fine points of posture, hand positioning, eye contact and stage presence.

On many occasions I have presented to groups as large as 2,000 people, including conducting several annual shareholder meetings for a public company.

I understand why it is difficult to begin speaking in front of groups and I enjoy helping others learn to overcome their fears and learn to actually enjoy the experience of public speaking.
