About Althea

I effectively prepare students for university and inspire them to succeed. I tutor both undergraduate and graduate students and empower them to achieve intellectual and academic excellence as well as professional and vocational goals. Students benefit from my expertise in reading, writing, and speech for academic and business purposes. They especially enjoy preparation and practice for public speaking engagements and respond positively to teaching techniques that include individualized and collective considerations.

I am also highly effective in teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Learners greatly benefit from the acquisition of four skills - Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. I assist them in improving their academic, business, and psycho-social skills, and they become more and more confident as I guide them into being competent English users.

My academic background allowed me to teach at multiple education levels. It permitted me to learn foreign languages and facilitated my TESOL experience for more than 12 years. In the USA, I participated in Adult Literacy programs by tutoring international learners. Learners developed a love for literacy as they learned to read, write, and do mathematical computations. In South Korea, I enjoyed being an English Professor. I loved preparing primary and secondary teachers for certification as well as teaching undergraduate and graduate learners. I taught Chinese, Japanese, Korean and other majors, and many students were from China, Mongolia, Philippines, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, and other countries. Students enjoyed the practice session, especially because it improved their confidence. My students did not only improve in retention and grades in English class but also in their other academic classes.

My Continuing Education learners were accomplished professionals in the Government, Military, Business, Medicine, Farming, Education, and other professions. In my classroom, they loved to develop skills and abilities for academic, professional and business purposes and also for conversation and international communication. My lessons particularly stimulated curiosity and helped them to improve self-efficacy. Learners also acquired knowledge, skills, abilities, and interests for graduate school, professional development and career advancement.

Teaching in South Korea has made me greatly compassionate to learners, especially after I learned Korean and was a foreign learner in a foreign language classroom.

My Business career is highlighted by a 15-year tenure of building businesses and developing organizations in both the private and public sectors. My professorship in Business and Business English in Higher Education also adds to my business portfolio as business students, professionals and owners acquired knowledge, skills, abilities and exposure to business. My practice allowed entrepreneurs to conduct business as well as engage in business development, enhancement and expansion. I have completed coursework in Business Management as well as Human Resources Management which provided knowledge and exposure to work and career development in the business arena.

Public Speaking

Students greatly benefited from my reflective professor-practitioner approach to teaching and learning Public Speaking at Konyang University.

Included in my academic guidance was keen focus on audience, occasion, topic, content, and time. I used materials to effectively stimulate both curiosity and creativity and provided feedback that facilitated development of confidence, use of concise vocabulary, and effective delivery.

For example, I would use flash cards with words, topics, or occasions for impromptu speaking. Initially, students would not be open to spontaneity, but when I explained, and they began to experientially understand, that it facilitates creativity and builds confidence, they would welcome the activity and have fun critiquing one another as they became intellectually stimulated.

Students critically benefited from video presentations, personal demonstrations, and other simulations in my coaching sessions, especially in techniques for posture, eye contact, hand gestures, voice, and use of media. Because I also take a holistic approach to teaching and learning, I motivated them by both individualized and group consideration of academic, psychosocial and sociocultural needs and interests, and those students would develop an unexpected love for practice sessions. Shy students would often say, “I really thought I could not make it in your class, but I’m glad I stayed.”

Students used reflective journalling after each lesson, as well as prepared and delivered speeches on topic of interests for assignments, test preparation and final examinations.

I also provided personalized coaching for annual speech contests, and students significantly benefited from the interactiveness and psychosocial approach of my techniques and lessons.

Many of my peers, professors, and people in public settings have often complimented me on being an effective public speaker. I have acquired knowledge, honed skills, and enhanced my abilities in public speaking through academic and international speaking engagements.

Induction into the Georgetown Toast Master’s Club was the first prize for the end-of-program speech contests, and I was the winner of my contest!

Reading

Students greatly benefit from my reflective, creative and passionate approaches to teaching and learning Reading. For example, they draw on my passion, and become captivated by voice modulation and emotion. As in learning a language, they listen, learn new vocabulary, follow, and then burst out reading. As such, they develop confidence in reading and curiosity for knowledge.

I create interesting materials to facilitate vocabulary building, attention to detail, and critical thinking, and choose stimulating readings to sustain attention. They love the opportunity to choose books and passages and to choose topics that are exciting to them. In that way, they almost always develop a love for reading.

Writing

Students learn best from my practice sessions. They especially like practice sessions when they write individually and receive individualized feedback. That way, they build confidence and become stimulated to write, particularly because they receive psychological empowerment.

They also greatly benefit by way of Grammar and Vocabulary enhancement.

One of my best techniques in Writing class is Reading.
I coined the phrase, " Good reader, Better writer."

Hence, students improve their reading skills and some even develop a love for reading.

Because I believe writing and reading are inextricably interwoven, I create and use materials that encourage contextual vocabulary building and facilitate reading comprehension. For example, I use interesting passages
and choose words for vocabulary building at the beginning of the lesson. Then students use those words to form sentences,
and write paragraphs with the sentences.

I develop and implement assessment criteria, develop and administrate tests, perform test preparation, and taught Writing, as well as Reading & Writing at Konyang University,
St. Georges C. Primary School, and Jersey City Public Library.
