University of South Florida (Theatre)
Hello, students and parents!
My name is April B., and I'm available to serve as a tutor in a variety of subjects. Some of the subjects include English, literature, grammar, reading comprehension, public speaking, SAT language prep, theatre and vocabulary. I have a BA in Theatre Arts and a minor in English from the University of South Florida. I have worked with a wide variety of age groups for all subjects, ranging from elementary school up to undergrad. I have worked as a vocal coach with both actors and non-actors. Having worked in the professional theatre world with numerous companies (as well as founding and co-owning one), I have experience with acting, creative writing and directing as well. This has allowed me to combine my experiences and passion for the performing arts, English and literature. When working with a student, I understand that each person is unique and requires an individual lesson plan made to fit their specific needs.
Take public speaking, for example. I would take a personal approach with the student to determine what their needs are. Is it stage fright? Lack of confidence? Issues with enunciation or articulation? Trouble with breathing or projection? I would teach my student that public speaking is not just something they have to deal with, but that it can be fun and empowering! One student that I previously worked with had difficulty with pronunciation; I created lesson plans that included a variety of games (like funny tongue twisters), exercises (such as breathing to support the voice and working with plosives) and other tricks that allowed my student to build up the confidence to address a crowd and the skills required to use his entire body as an instrument. He mastered public speaking and has gone on to have great success in school!
One of my other students struggled with Shakespeare. When dealing classical literature and poetry, I broke it down into two categories: prose and verse. We talked about what type of story each style told by how it was used. I taught the differences between metaphors and similes and how to discover the allegory for each story. One of my favorite exercises that I used was to take lines from playwrights such as Shakespeare or Moliere and translate individual lines into modern day speech. For example, from "Romeo and Juliet":
"Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?" What does that line mean? This confuses many readers because they think that Juliet is asking WHERE Romeo is. Rather, she is saying "WHY are you Romeo?", as in, "WHY are you a Montague? Why do you have to come from a family that my own family hates?" Examples such a these helps teach my the students that although these scripts and stories were written many years ago, they still talk about the same things we find important in the modern world and even had a similar sense of humor. Some jokes and puns really do transcend time!
My goal is to make learning a fun experience, while helping the students master the subject at hand. I look forward to hearing from you! Hello, students and parents!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Having a background of theatre and performance that exceeds 15 years, I'm extremely comfortable with speaking in public, and have learned many exercises along the way. I have 8 years of experience as a vocal coach, and have worked with both actors and students on breathing, articulation, diction, projection and speaking with confidence.
I have a BA in theatre arts with a minor in English. I also own a theatre company based in Tampa which allows me to continue to work with a variety of performers in the subjects mentioned above. When working with students or actors, I teach them that speaking is a full-body experience, and that the body itself is an instrument.
I have a BA in Theatre Arts from the University of South Florida. My theatre experience includes acting, scene study, theatre history, vocal control, makeup design, auditioning and directing. I am also the owner and co-founder of a Tampa-based theatre company which is also a member of Theatre Tampa Bay. I have performed in numerous shows with different theatre companies, have directed four shows, and I have written three shows that have been produced and performed in both the Silver Meteor Gallery and the Shimberg Playhouse. I have worked with and tutored a number of actors and students with varying degrees of experience, coaching them for auditions, exams and scene study classes.
