Teryl is amazing and connected with my daughter immediately. She has given her confidence to start reading and writing on her own. Her strategy of helping my daughter has been unbelievably productive.
Gayle - My sincere thanks for your feedback! More importantly, thank you for trusting me to help enhance your daughter's learning experience. I am passionate about teaching and the reward of knowing your daughter is progressing as a result of our time together inspires me all the more! I look forward to my next session with her :-)
My Teryl is a very nice lady. As a teacher, she is patient, explains in detail, has a teaching plan. She knows her subject- English SAT in this case, and comes up with neat ideas in difficult situations.
Thank you, Salil! With 'next steps' in place, I'm excited to accompany your daughter along this portion of her academic journey. Her willingness to employ the strategies we've discussed with fidelity, and her pleasant disposition are going to make this a rewarding endeavor for me!
Teryl L is a very knowledgeable and patient tutor with my son. She is tutoring him in Algebra 1. He is learning what he has been missing in class. He is gaining his confidence back and scoring higher on his test! Thank you Teryl for all that you do.
Thank you, Lauri, for welcoming me into your home and trusting me to move your son forward. I appreciate you allowing me to set learning expectations for him and partnering with me to be sure he meets the goals we set for him. The experience has been as much a benefit for me as it has for him!
Teryl is an excellent educator for our son, she is familiar with all of the testing requirements and can teach them. She is also very adept at tutoring specific subjects. She is currently tutoring my son in math. She connected with my son immediately and got him on an education plan for our time with her. This is a sign of a teacher that loves to teach, which is what you want in a tutor for your child. I highly recommend her.
Tiffany - I greatly appreciate you taking the time to post this review! Presently, our society is reflective of more frequently broadcasting the negative and "thank you" is seldom spoken. I am fortunate and honored to have the privilege of working with your son. Thank you for entrusting him to me.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
ACT Reading primarily consists of relationships of pieces of text i.e. determining how a sentence adds to the meaning of another, comparing and contrasting, and cause & effect. Students must also be able to detect main idea, author's purpose, various literary devices, and the like. My 12 years of classroom experience as a reading instructor and 600+ hours of training in this discipline will allow me guide students to clue words and phrases that will help them find the required 'text based' proof to support or disprove answer choices as they navigate text.
I am certified in middle grade math grades 5 thru 9, to include Prealgebra and Algebra I. I have taught students in each of these subject areas from elementary students to adult students preparing for a GED certificate.
I am a 16 year certified teacher in the state of Florida. My certifications include Elementary Education K-6, Math 5-9, the ESOL Endorsement, and the Reading Endorsement. I taught in the elementary grades for 5 years. The remainder of my 16 years have been in both middle and high school settings.
I am certified in middle grade math grades 5 thru 9, to include Prealgebra and Algebra I. I have four years teaching experience in the elementary classroom, and four additional years of both classroom teaching and tutoring in Algebra I. Prior to becoming an educator, my work experience includes the area of accounting, which allowed me to strengthen my math skills daily.
Teaching students to read well - i.e. comprehend text - relies heavily on grammar. I have consistently worked hand in hand with our English teachers to help students see the relationship between understanding the text placed before them and knowing the purpose of punctuation, syntax, and clue words. As well, we work together to help students identify use of literary devices and the role these devices play in developing contextual meaning. My classroom experience in this discipline exceeds 10 years and 600 professional training hours.

I taught in the elementary grades for 5 years. The remainder of my 16 years have been in both middle and high school settings. As for homeschooling, I have assisted homeschool parents with preparing lessons, choosing curriculum, and mapping out their child's day so as to help achieve balance between academic content and extracurricular activities. Additionally, I am on the school district's Home Educator Evaluator list, rendering me eligible to administer state standardized tests to homeschool students.
I am certified in middle grade math grades 5 thru 9, to include Prealgebra and Algebra I. My current teaching assignment requires that I tutor students in both Algebra I and Prealgebra from 1-2 hours daily. In previous years, I have tutored students in Algebra I off campus over the course of several years. My teaching experience includes four years in the elementary classroom and four additional years teaching Algebra I to both middle school and high school students.
I have over 600 hours of professional development training in this discipline and 12 years' classroom experience as a reading instructor. I've also spent four years as a reading coach - a support to other teachers to assist with embedding literacy across the curriculum. Additionally, I have been a part of a team of teachers assigned to help prep our juniors and seniors for standardized tests (i.e., ACT and SAT).
SAT Reading is heavily dependent upon vocabulary knowledge. Teaching students word parts i.e. affixes and roots - is a helpful strategy to dissect unfamiliar words, thereby unlocking the meaning of the text. I have over 600 hours of professional development training in this discipline and 12 years classroom experience as a reading instructor. Additionally, I have been a part of a team of teachers assigned to help prep our juniors and seniors for standardized tests (i.e. ACT and SAT).
Teaching elementary students the fundamentals of spelling required learing particular patterns e.g. CVC, CVVC, rhyming schemes, 'i' before 'e', hard sounds vs. soft sounds, silent letters, phonetic spelling, and much more. These spelling rules also carry over to more complex words for older groups of students. Sight words - those that do not follow any particular pattern but are used often in grade level text - can be taught using associative song lyrces and other strategies to help students improve.
Teaching students to read well - i.e., comprehend text - relies heavily on vocabulary, grammar, and spelling. With that, my extensive training and many years of experience as a reading instructor and coach lend to my ability to teach students skills and strategies that will guide them toward mastery in each of the aforementioned areas of learning.
