About Anne

I have been an elementary school teacher for over 7 years and a homeschool teacher for one year. I received a Masters in Education from DePaul University. I have worked from inner-city Chicago public schools to private schools in Europe and Florida. I have an Illinois teaching license and have been certified in the Orton-Gilligham method of reading instruction.

I have been a private tutor for two and a half years. I also had the wonderful opportunity to be a second grade homeschool teacher. Tutoring has given me the opportunity to work one-on-one with struggling students that I always tried to do in my classrooms. As an experienced teacher, I tailor each lesson plan to the specific needs of each student I tutor. I make sure to take into account not only what students are struggling to learn, but also their strengths and interests.

One of the things I most enjoy about planning lessons is the chance to be creative. Students need fun, interesting and hands-on interactions in order to learn new concepts. I always use a variety of activities in each session to keep student attention and insure that students do not feel intimidated with learning material.

Often students who need tutoring have lost confidence in their abilities if they have already struggled with a subject at school. Parents of my students always appreciate the change they see in their child's attitude towards school. This is one of the aspects of tutoring that I find extremely rewarding.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

With my extensive classroom experience, I have learned a great deal about the specific struggles students with ADD/ADHD encounter when trying to learn. I have been an active observer in diagnosing students in my classrooms which involved making accommodations for some students. While tutoring my ADD/ADHD diagnosed students one-on-one, I have found that it does not take long to realize when students need a quick break, which I usually use to let students do physical activities of their choosing including stretches. I have also found that it is important to let students have time to talk about whatever they want because these students are highly verbal. Each student has been different, but I have found that writing is a common subject these students struggle with and I have worked a great deal on making writing, as well as reading, a more enjoyable activity for them.

American History

I have taught American History to young students in my classroom. I also tutored a 6th grade autistic girl in American History.

Art History

I have BA in Art History and French. I also studied Art History at the Universite Paris X for one year. I have traveled extensively in Europe, also living in Rome. It is a subject I am passionate about. I completed an internship at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Dyslexia

During my certification graduate course in Orton-Gillingham, I learned a great deal about dyslexia. I found Orton-Gillingham's methods to be perfect for helping the students I tutored with dyslexia I used the program for a Kindergarten, 1st grade and 4th grade student. Orton-Gillingham's activities, as I used them, helped them make great gains in understanding language. I was extremely impressed by how fast my dyslexic students progressed.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been an elementary school teacher for over 7 years. I received a Masters in Education from DePaul University. I have worked from inner-city Chicago public schools to private schools in Europe and Florida. I have an Illinois teaching license and have been certified in the Orton-Gilligham method of reading instruction.

Elementary Science

School science curriculums vary greatly from school to school, even within the same city and are often insufficient. I have always been the team member of my grade level colleagues who created the science curriculum for my students, even at my bilingual school in Paris. I enjoy teaching science activities because students are innately curious about the world around them and are interested in learning. Science is also a subject that can be taught with many creative lessons outside, and with experiments and projects.

European History

I received an excellent formation in European History through my classes at the University of Paris IV. I have also lived in and traveled around Europe. My Art History degree also included a great deal of learning on European History. I have a great passion for this subject.

Phonics

I have been responsible for creating phonics lessons for whole class, small groups, and individual student instruction. Phonics and phonemic awareness skills are an essential foundation for reading success. I have found that phonics and phonemic awareness lessons can also be the most fun, creative, active, and hands-on lessons in reading. These are the skills that I have most often revisited with struggling readers that I have tutored. If students have missed solidifying these concepts, this is usually the basis for all other reading difficulties. It has always been a subject I teach students through games and activities that are so enjoyable, students don't realize they are learning so much. During my Orton-Gillingham training, I was astounded to find a phonics program that included both the introduction of new concepts and an effective quick review of previous skills. I feel that this is a phonics program that would be perfect for any school system and one-on-one teaching.

Social Studies

As a classroom teacher in different schools and countries, I was responsible for creating the curriculum for social studies as there are not many curriculum resources for schools. I enjoyed creating these units on American and World History, maps and other aspects of Social Studies.
