About Michael

I am a retired Elementary teacher from Long Island. Actually, I was born and raised in Glasgow, Scotland. My teaching experience includes tutoring English Language to adults and children in Israel. After moving to New York, I received a masters degree in English Language Arts. I taught Elementary School on Long Island for 12 years. Currently, I teach Hebrew in an after-school program and tutor English Language arts through Wyzant. I strongly believe in using humor to teach. When a child enjoys the learning experience, a lack of motivation can quickly turn into positive self motivation.
On a personal level, I spend most of my spare time writing short stories and inventing educational quiz games for children and adults.

When students are keen to learn, and of equal importance there is strong positive parental support, a positive chemistry is created. In such a positive atmosphere, children both want and are able to learn in a healthy learning atmosphere.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

In 1980, soon after I arrived in America, I sat for my my ACT reading test in Suffolk Community College in New York. I did this to check if I was proficient in American English as I was educated in Scotland. While we share the same language, there are differences in both spelling and in a few cases understanding of word meanings. I passed easily although I do not remember my score. Since then, I have achieved a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and a Masters in Reading from Long Island University.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a retired (K-6) teacher. I taught in elementary schools on Long Island for over ten years. I have tutored children in all academic subjects.

Elementary Math

I have taught math in (K-6th) for nearly 15 years. I also tutored my own children in math through Middle school. When teaching class in Long Island I tutored elementary school students who struggled with basic mathematical concepts.

English

I taught English for almost 15 years on Long Island, New York. I strongly believe in utilizing Reade's Theater as a method for expanding reading fluency. This can also be shown to parents so they can easily help their child's fluency. Parents who struggle with English can also work with their children to improve their comprehension and fluency using Reader's Theater.

Geography

I have lived and taught in three continents. I taught geography in New York and Israel. I was educated in Glasgow, Scotland. I love geography and am in the process of having an interactive geography book for children edited for publication. Simply put, world geography is my favorite subject to teach and learn about.

Grammar

Aside from being a retired elementary teacher, I am in the middle of publishing two books. When I decided to retire from teaching and become an author, I quickly learned to pay attention to the grammar needed to write a book successfully. This experience has taught me to pay careful attention to using correct grammar at all times and translates into helping me become a stronger tutor of the subject.

Hebrew

I taught Hebrew school and Bar/Bat Mitzvahs at Temple Beth Emeth in Mt Sinai NY and Jewish Studies at Giffnock Cheder in Glasgow, Scotland I also taught beginners Hebrew to adults in the temple Beth Emeth. I lived on Kibbutz En-Dor for a number of years. I hold an American, Israeli, and British passport. I also taught Elementary school in Long Island. Names, Dates, phone numbers and addresses can be furnished at student's request.

Literature

I studied literature as a part of my master's degree in reading. I also run a writing course in Tampa and attend a reading group.

Proofreading

I run a writing bi-weekly writing group in our local library called Do The Write Thing Tampa. A large portion of our meetings are taken up with proofreading each other's writing contributions. In this manner we are able to improve our craft.

Reading

I taught English for almost 15 years on Long Island, New York. I strongly believe in utilizing Reader's Theater as a method for expanding reading fluency. This can also be shown to parents so they can easily help their child's fluency. Parents who struggle with English can also work with their children to improve their comprehension and fluency using Reader's Theater.

Social Studies

I have lived on three continents. North America, Europe, (Britain) and Asia (Israel)
When I taught in Long Island, I ended the year with International Day. Parents came to school and witnessed their children's projects on their selected countries. They also sang a song in ten languages. I am in the process of finishing a children's interactive geography book. I find American children (and parents) woefully lacking in geographical knowledge of both the United States, and the world.

Spelling

In Scotland where I spent my childhood, spelling was a very important part of the curriculum. When I began teaching in New York, I was surprised at the lack of importance students were expected to pay on the subject. I have seen improvement in the students spelling and other language arts at the schools I taught at on Long Island. The important thing is to teach the subject through humor. It might sound strange, but it works very well and students thoroughly enjoy learning.

Study Skills

I have tutored children and adults in multiple subjects in New York and Israel. I believe in using humor to teach. A bored child easily becomes an uninterested learner. When I use humor it creates a relationship that affords the student a positive learning atmosphere which translates not just in results, but into a desire to learn.

Vocabulary

As an author as well as a teacher, I am well aware how knowledge of a strong and varied vocabulary can help students gain confidence in all subjects. Using humor to teach the subject helps struggling students learn without pressure. As their vocabulary grows, their confidence and ability to grow in other academic subjects also grows.

Writing

Students who are reluctant writers have simply not yet experienced the joy of using their imagination to bring writing to life. I motivate children's hidden and untapped ability not just to write, but to love writing. In order to help a student love writing, the student has to be given the opportunity to write on a topic the student loves.
