About Tracy

As lover of learning, I enjoy working with individual students to help them build skills and strategies to make them successful. My many years of experience teaching Special Education at various grade levels, taught me helpful techniques to engage students in their own learning process and overcome difficulties to find success.

In addition to my degrees in education and teaching experience, I've also been trained in a variety of specialized reading, math, and study skills programs, such as:
Wilson Language™ , Lindmood-Bell Phonemic Sequencing™ , Seeing Stars ™, Visualizing & Verbalizing™, Touch Math ™, C.R.I.S.S. Strategies ™, All Kinds of Minds ™, Landmark School Strategies... and many more!

I am also a smiley face collector and enthusiast! :-)

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have co-taught Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1 courses in Middle and High School as well as tutored numerous students to build skills in this area.
My FL certification includes Math (5-9)

American History

My undergraduate degree is in Social Sciences Education and I hold teaching certificate in Social Studies in both MA & FL. I've taught U.S. history and government at the College Prep/High School and Middle School levels.

Aspergers

In my years teaching Special Education, I have worked with several students with Asperger's or on the Autism spectrum. My experience working & teaching in the Lindamood-Bell Learning System Center included students with these issues.

Career Development

As a Middle School teacher I taught career exploration units within my study skills classes. When I taught High School, I also assisted with Career Development through assigning career projects and addressing the future plans of Special Education students graduating (transition plans) and transitioning into either higher education or the work force.

Dyslexia

I have tutored Dyslexic students since High School. In fact, that is what led me to become a teacher! In addition to being certified in ESE, my specialty over 15 years of being a Special Education teacher has been teaching dyslexic students to read. I have taught individual and small group reading classes and have training in specialized instruction including Lindamood-Bell Programs, Great Leaps, and many other phonics based reading programs.

Elementary (K-6th)

In addition to being certified in FL to teach Elementary K-6, I have experience teaching Elementary level special education at schools in both FL & CA. Also, the majority of my tutorial students over the years have been grades 3-6.

Elementary Math

I have experience teaching Elementary level special education at schools in both FL & CA, included small group math classes. During my time teaching in Massachusetts, a large focus for my middle school students was remediation of elementary math skills. I enjoy creating fun, real-life math activities that help student smile & like math again!

ESL/ESOL

As a public school special education teacher, I taught English Language learners coming from a wide variety of native languages. I have specific training in language immersion and phonics to tailor lessons to meet individual needs.

GED

In addition to previously teaching high school, I have tutored adults preparing for the GED in the past. I've helped numerous students learn basic skills in various GED subjects, as well as test taking strategies.

Geometry

In addition to doing well in this subject in school myself, I also co-taught Geometry at the High School level. I have great resources and visual aides to help clarify this often difficult subject and approach it from all angles! ;-) Please let me assist you.

Grammar

As an experience educator, I have taught grammar and language skills at a variety of levels. Much of my classroom teaching experience included teaching students with language-based learning disabilities, so I have focused heavily on direct instruction of grammar and spelling. I look forward to helping you in this area!

Phonics

I am trained in numerous phonics-based specialized reading instruction programs. I have taught individual phonics based reading tutorials and small group reading classes for over 15 years. Phonics instruction programs I have used include: Lindamood-Bell Programs (Lindamood Phonemic Sequencing, VV, Seeing Stars), Wilson Language, Great Leaps.

Prealgebra

I've taught pre-algebra to both 7th and 8th graders. The bulk of time working with 8th grade special needs students was focused on Math needs, primarily pre-Algebra. I'm also certified in Math grades 5-9.

Public Speaking

In addition to having taken college courses in Communication, I have done extensive public speaking. I have presented to large groups (100+), given lectures, guest sermons, and presented at academic functions (such as graduations & assemblies). I have excellent techniques to overcome fear and effectively communicate.

Reading

My specialty has been teaching students with dyslexia how to read. I have training in several specialized reading instruction techniques including: Wilson Reading, Lindamood-Bell Learning Systems, & Great Leaps.

Religion

I have taught comparative religions, in both an academic school setting and in Sunday school at a Unitarian Universalist church. My focus is on basic facts and tenets of various religions, including earth/nature based faiths, and examining similarities of ideas, stories, and sacred texts in a wide array of world religions. I have been an ordained minister through the Universal Life Church since 1997 and have given guest sermons at a Unitarian Universalist church.

Social Studies

In addition to my certifications in Social Studies (Florida and Massachusetts), I have taught numerous Social Studies courses including: Middle School- U.S. History, Civics, Geography; High School- Government, Economics, Psychology, Sociology, & Cultural Geography. At the Elementary level I have taught & adapted general social studies lessons.

Sociology

In addition to my certifications in Social Studies, [Florida (6-12), Massachusetts (5-9 & 9-12)], I taught Sociology at Landmark School (High School/College Prep) for several years. I have also taken numerous college courses in Sociology.

Spelling

In teaching phonics based reading for over 15 years, I have found that spelling (encoding) and reading (decoding) really go together. It helps students to understand spelling expectations and keep track of the "rules". Let me help you master the often difficult task of spelling.

Study Skills

The bulk of my teaching in Special Education over the past 15 years has incorporated teaching study skills and tools. Study skills are an important component of any effective teacher's curriculum for all students, especially those who must overcome learning disabilities.

Writing

I taught for many years at a College Prep/ High School in New England, Landmark School. During that time I was also a Senior Class Advisor and assisted many students with writing and editing college essays.
