I started tutoring as a junior in college. I held a part-time job as a Site Coordinator for an after school program at a local DC high school. My job was to simply monitor the student's’ classroom interactions and take attendance, but my passion for helping others made my role naturally expand. I began to tutor and mentor the students in addition to voluntarily holding career development and college preparation workshops.
I specialize in tutoring English, Writing, and History. My passion is helping people become better and stronger writers. I grew up always being told I was a good writer until I met my 9th grade Advanced English teacher. She gave me my first and last C on a paper as I was learning how to develop a thesis. I would stay after school with her as she broke down to me in a very simple way the correct way to format any paper. Those lessons carried me through the rest of high school and college. Be prepared to tell me “Why Dogs Make Good Pets?” in a future writing session!
My goal for each session is to make sure the student feels comfortable and not overwhelmed during the learning experience. I am generally available for tutoring in the evenings from 6pm to 9pm and have open availability on the weekends. I prefer to meet in public locations such as libraries or coffee shops and do not mind coming to a location closer to the student. My base rate is $30/hour for in-person lessons and I do offer a discount for multiple lessons.

Whitney identified and addressed some of the areas needing improvement with my son. She is reliable and communicates well. To date, the experience of her tutoring my son has been professional and pleasant. Thank you, Whitney!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have previously led workshops on career development for high school students in the DC Metropolitan area. In addition, I also actively volunteered with Junior Achievement of America. I have experience developing curriculum and fun activities to assist in the process of evaluating educational paths, developing skills, and job/interview prep.
In college, I took a Public Speaking course in which I received an A. In addition, I also participate in Toastmasters and make weekly speeches to improve my public speaking abilities.
