About Lorraine

I am interested in helping students (elementary, middle/high school, college-level adult) in the areas of study skills and preparation for tests (literature, grammar, vocabulary, writing, proofreading), or business, and career development. I also teach visual art expression. Each individual has their own unique learning style, whether it be auditory, visual, tactile, kinesthetic, global, or analytic. To help a student reach his/her goals, it is important to develop critical study skills including 1)organization/time management; 2)note-taking; 3)memory skills; 4)test-taking; 5)reading in content areas; 6)vocabulary development; 7)listening and 8) achieving metacognition.

I have had many years of working with young children and teenagers and successfully raised my own daughter, a college grad. I have experience in teaching Montessori to pre-school children, outreach health educator to high schools and colleges, working with high school and college-level volunteers and teaching life-skills and therapeutic art expression to at-risk teenagers and adults at a non-profit (for nearly six years) and also teaching Special Education 7th Grade Math and 8th Grade Language Arts in an at-risk public school with a 98% Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) passing rate. I previously held a temporary educator certification in Art (K-12 / 2005-2008).

My early college years focused on a major in Fine Arts - Painting. Later in my career, I received a B.S. in Human Services and an M.S. in Human Services - Organizational Management and Leadership. I have also completed one year of doctorate coursework (towards an Ed.D) in Organizational Management and Leadership. I am currently a Marketing Contractor and have my own web-based business.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have previous ESE teaching experience (2005-2006) in middle school (7th Grade Math & 8th Grade Language Arts) and have training in Behavior Management for Exceptional Students as well as Case Management. I successfully worked with students with specific learning disabilities (SLD) as well as emotional/behavioral disabilities (EBD) and my students achieved a 98% passing rate for the 2006 FCAT Writes! (Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test), which was the overall highest percentile achieved for Pierce Middle School in Tampa, Florida, since 2001.

I was also the Executive Director of a non-profit day respite center (1/99-12/03) and in charge of the adult & parent programs as well as the comprehensive children's day care (1-5 yrs), after school (6-12) and teen programs (13-18). I successfully conducted developmental testing, provided ongoing counseling and taught life skills and a supplemental curriculum to the children and teens.

Business

I have several years of results-driven, comprehensive experience in profit and non-profit business, including human resources management, leadership, supervision, training, marketing and consulting. I have been recognized for clear, decisive actions and credited with improving business performance, encouraging intense collaboration among executive teams, and implementing emerging technologies. My experience includes business start-up, finance, budgeting, profitability and cost analysis, writing business plans, strategic and tactical planning, employee motivation and conflict resolution, and implementing policies and procedures.

I have a B.S. in Human Services from Springfield College, an M.S. in Human Services-Organizational Management and Leadership from Springfield College and one year of completed doctoral coursework in Organizational Management and Leadership at Argosy University - School of Psychology and Behavioral Sciences.

Career Development

Having experience in teaching life-skills in a non-profit and public school setting, I would like to teach and help students learn basic career development planning skills, career exploration, and preparation. Planning for a career involves learning about yourself, your skills, your strengths, weaknesses, and your aptitude towards a particular career.

This is a step-by-step process that involves four modules. The first module teaches students how to apply themselves for their future by learning about motivation and responsibility. Developing certain life skills prepares students for what they need to be successful in life. The second module helps students identify certain aspects of themselves and then identify potential careers. The third module helps students identify their strengths and weaknesses, developing a vision for the future in order to live a more balanced, fulfilling and happy life. The fourth module helps students explore various careers and the skills, education and training that is required.

I have a Behavioral Healthcare Certificate from the University of South Florida, a B.S. in Human Services and an M.S. in Human Services - Organizational Management and Leadership. I also have one year in doctoral coursework in Organizational Management and Leadership at Argosy University - School of Psychology and Behavioral Sciences.

College Counseling

As a former Executive Director and Teacher, I have seven years of previous counseling experience and have worked with middle and high school students as well as college-level volunteers (in conjunction with their parents) to help them: 1) Determine their college major; 2) Assist in their college selection that matches their interests and goals; 3) Prepare for the college application and admission process; 4) Understand financial aid and loan options, and make enrollment decisions; and 5) Assist in their continual development and success.

I have also provided guidance in acclimating to college life (i.e., life skills to help them with budgeting their money and handling credit, adjusting to living on campus, developing appropriate study habits, handling peer pressure, fear of testing and time management).

Drawing

I began my art education at Gatlinburg School of Crafts (Metalsmithing), Memphis Academy of Art, San Francisco Academy of Art (Photography) and the University of Arizona in Tucson (Painting). Initially in a foundation program, the various mediums studied included painting, drawing/perspective, photography, sculpture, advertising/design, textiles (i.e., weaving, printing, dyeing, silk screen), metalsmithing, pottery and calligraphy.

Finding my niche in acrylic painting, later studies were based on a belief of traditional techniques and theories and their contemporary applications. A major influence in my work has been the culture of the southwest (its colors, landscapes, and Native American culture) with an aesthetic sensibility toward composition.

I have had my works acquired in private collections, shown in art galleries and my paintings have been in exhibitions. I previously held a temporary educator certificate in Art (K-12 / 2005-2008).

Dyslexia

I have previous ESE teaching experience (2005-2006) in middle school (7th Grade Math & 8th Grade Language Arts) and have training in Behavior Management for Exceptional Students as well as Case Management. I successfully conducted developmental testing, provided ongoing counseling and taught life skills and a supplemental curriculum to the children and teens.

ESL/ESOL

Being a former Language Arts Teacher in Special Education and helping a large percentage of Spanish-speaking students, I have taken many courses to help students learn language/vocabulary, reading and writing. Many of the effective courses included: 1) Project CRISS (CReating Independence through Student-owned Strategies) which is an educational initiative designed to help students of all abilities learn content information across the curriculum and throughout the grade levels; 2) SRA Corrective Reading, which provides intensive, sustained direct instruction to address deficiencies in decoding and comprehension; 3) Vertical Articulation - Language Arts, a process of designing curriculum that is sequenced from beginning learning and skills to more advanced learning and skills. Vertical alignment supports student achievement as students progress through grade levels; 4) Best Practices in Language Arts; and 5) Area Content Training in Language Arts.

A major influence in my work has been the culture of the southwest (its colors, landscapes and Native American culture), with an aesthetic sensibility toward composition.

I have had my works acquired in private collections, shown in art galleries and my paintings submitted in exhibitions. My Master's Thesis was the study of the healing power of artistic expression and I also taught therapeutic artistic expression to at-risk youth and their families.

Study Skills

I have nearly six years experience teaching a life skills curriculum to middle and high school age students at a non-profit organization and a year of teaching Math to 7th Grade and Language Arts to 8th grade exceptional education students, as well as study skills in preparation for the FCAT (Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test). My students achieved a 98% passing rate, which was the overall highest percentile achieved for this particular school in five years.
