I am new to Wyzant, but definitely not new to tutoring**. In my opinion, tutoring is all about repairing the disconnect in knowledge and help the student understand the topic conceptually. Economics, Statistics, Algebra, and other math are full of intimidating equations and wordy, confusing definitions. However, once you have someone explain it to you in a straightforward way, the problems start to make a lot more sense. Doing well in this type of class has very little to do with memorization. In my experience, the adjustment primarily has to do with learning how to think critically and to conceptualize topics, rather than memorize equations. So the next step is to help the student apply the knowledge and think critically about each question. Once they learn how to do this, they have historically done very well in the class(es) that I helped them with.

When I was in college, I was introduced to tutoring while taking a “weed-out” class and still adjusting to the rigorous academic expectations at my University. It not only had the immediate benefit of improving my understanding of the material, but it also gave me a foundation of success that helped me in future classes. More specifically, learning with a tutor helped me identify the most effective studying techniques for me, and taught me how to apply my newly-gained knowledge in the context of each problem. I am grateful that I am now in a position where I return the favor and help a wide range of students who need it.

Before we have the session (ideally), send me the material that you want to cover so I can prepare. I have a huge folder with over a year's worth of notes from other sessions and a significant amount of online resources that I sometimes use to compile individualized "study guides" of material for students that need them. By using examples, visuals, and detailed explanations, I can make intimidating problems appear extremely straightforward. As a matter of policy, I bill an additional ½ hour for it, even though I typically spend more time than that on it.

Once we start the session, I share my screen with the student to either go over important notes or practice problems. Obviously, I have a fluid tutoring style that I adjust depending on the student. If he or she has a preference in teaching style or method, then I have no problem obliging (if it’s effective).

** (Over the past year, I have tutored a bunch of students online through a different platform. Until I get some ratings on Wyzant, you can my 4.9 rating on there as a benchmark for how successful I have been at helping students through their classes).

As far as my qualifications, I have an M.S. in Financial Economics and an extensive knowledge of statistics (Actuary Exam P, Econometrics). I also have a history of success helping students online. Some of the classes that I have tutored include: Middle School Math, Algebra, Statistics, Calculus, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Managerial Economics and International Development. I am also very good at improving student's Quantitative grades on the ACT or SAT, or helping them test into (or out of) College Algebra. If you are struggling in any math, statistics or economics courses, help me help you. Just contact me and send me what you want to go over. I will adjust to your needs and make sure you’re in a position to succeed.

Middle School/High School Math:
Middle School and High School math follows a curriculum that closely resembles what's on annual state assessments. This makes them very easy to follow. Similarly, AP classes are also standardized throughout the country. So, I have easily-understandable notes organized by Unit for most AP classes (Macro, Micro, Stats, etc). I have found AP students to be very intelligent and motivated. I don't think that I have helped an AP student who has NOT improved dramatically.

College:
At this point, school is like game with the goal being to get an A. There is significantly less accountability, so how difficult this is to achieve depends on the material, the professor, and the student's willingness to put in the necessary work. My goal is to find the most efficient and effective way to get you there. I can promise you that I will do everything that I can do to put you in a position to succeed, but whether it happens is entirely up to you. As a tutor, I can be a very powerful tool, but I don't want to be used as a crutch. I expect the student to be motivated to learn the material, or at least willing to put in the necessary effort to succeed. Otherwise, what's the point in paying me to tutor you?

Upper-Level/Graduate School:
I have tutored several Graduate Students in classes on Economics w/ applied statistics and Econometrics. I do not want to tutor any class that uses Python, R, or any coding. Send me the material if you are not sure if I can (or will) help you with the class.

If you need help with Econ or Math, then contact me to see if we could be a good fit. I tend to think of school as a game that teaches you how to think critically and how to succeed. That would make me your "coach" who comes up with a game-plan based on your learning style. Regardless of the situation, you can expect me to be fully invested in your success. AND since I'm new to Wyzant, you know I'll want to maximize my rating by going way above and beyond for you.

Econometrics,

Econometrics

Initially, my background in Stats came from studying Actuarial Science in college. In Graduate School, I was taught how to apply Econometrics and Time-Series Econometric methods to analyze economic situations. I also learned about Predictive Analytics and Data Mining while getting my Graduate Certificate in Big Data Analytics (similar to Econometrics). I primarily used STATA in Grad School, but I am also very good at Excel. If you need help in Econometrics, send me what you need to go over, and I will let you know if I can help.
Macroeconomics,

Macroeconomics

I have an M.S. in Econ. I have tutored a lot of Macro students in both college and AP. I keep all notes that I’ve made for prior students, so I have a large folder of Macro notes on each unit. Macro is about understanding the concepts. They like to use big words and complex definitions for topics that aren’t nearly as complicated as they seem.
Microeconomics,

Microeconomics

I have an M.S. in Financial Econ. In Grad School, I was the main Econ tutor for the Student Athletes, and many of them had trouble with Micro. I have also been a TA for Micro and Intermediate Micro. Since I’ve started tutoring at Varsity Tutors, I’ve kept the notes from students that I’ve helped. So I have a lot of good notes from topics that are covered in Micro.

Education: I have a Masters in Financial Economics, which involves a significant amount of applied statistics and econometrics. I also have a Graduate Certificate in Big Data Analytics, which also requires a lot of applied stats. I got my foundation in stats in undergrad. I got a minor in Actuarial Science, which involved learning Probability Theory, Statistical Theory and Regression Analysis. The Actuary Exam P was all Statistics mixed with Calculus. Experience: In Graduate School, I tutored Student Athletes for several semesters and helped them stay academically eligible. I became the head tutor for Stats, among other classes. I have also tutored online at Varsity Tutors for about a year. I would estimate that I have helped about 10 Stats students with Varsity Tutors and no one got lower than a B. I have a bunch of notes, and Unit study guides that I’ve made for the 3 AP stats students that I help. I also have practice tests and cumulative formula sheets. Let me know if you need help! I can guarantee that I’ll put you in a position to succeed.

Knowledgeable & Encouraging Tutor.

Bradley went over practice questions for The Accuplacer Exam. Bradley was able to break down the problems and guide me to understanding algebra intuitively. I’ve long struggled with negative numbers, I felt comfortable telling him that. Throughout our session he gave words of encouragement. Bradley ensured I understood the problem(s) by asking me to solve before we moved to the next one. Thank you again Bradley! I feel confident I’ll be able to pass with your help, patience, and knowledge.

Prepared and thorough

Brad was great. I sent him my trouble problems ahead of time and he was well prepared. We managed to work through everything and plan to touch base again. He was accommodating and very knowledgeable and helped me understand a lot.
