About Cole

I'm a 23 year old graduate. I have a passion for learning, teaching, and literature. I love working with all age groups, but my widest breadth of experience is with 10-18 year olds.

I used to teach Shakespeare to 8 year olds! If I can get them to understand, and dare I say enjoy The Bard, then I believe I can help you with any academic problems you may face. I can probably help you with personal problems too, but let's not get weird. I have my undergraduate degree in Theatre, specifically in Costume Design. That means I've spent several years of my life learning how to make stories and ideas that may seem dull on the page engaging, understandable, informative, and relatable to all age groups. I've worked closely with literature, history, and art to achieve this, and would be delighted to help your student learn to love these subjects.

And over the years I have had my share of totally awful teachers! It created a passion in me for learning, and an understanding that maybe the traditional way isn't what comes easy and maybe isn't what's best for you or your child. Asking for help can be hard, but in embracing what we know to be a weakness can lead to even greater strengths! I don't like to coddle my students, I believe a good work ethic is the key to life long good habits. As they say practice makes perfect, but practice doesn't have to be dull. I believe that learning isn't solely rooted in memorization, rote, and regurgitation. Learning is engaging and understanding and reinventing. I want to help your child approach their studies with joy and enthusiasm, the way we are meant to learn.

As Hamlet would say "Words, words words!" I love the English language. I love it's variety, it's nuances, it's ever changing elusiveness. My degree works closely with Literature. The analysis of not only the story, but of the word choice, the characters, even the rhythm of the language itself. Outside of that I was in advanced and AP English classes all my life and consistently made high marks in them. While I have never been a teacher in the traditional sense of the word, I have taught in informal settings for several years. I was a head instructor at a literary based summer camp for 7-13 year olds for 3 years. During my undergrad I earned a scholarship of merit that involved teaching my fellow students how to sew and hold their own in a professional costume shop.

My education is as follows: I earned a Bachelor's in Fine Arts in Costume Design and Technology for the Theatre: Brenau University (graduated with honors). I am pursing a Master's in Fine Arts in Costume Design: Florida State University. In pursuing my education I have been awarded several scholarships and grants for academic achievement, as well as achievement within my field. I'd love to hear from you, and know how I can help you reach your goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Needlework

As a part of a scholarship I received in my undergrad, I taught other students to sew and perform needle work. I hold a BFA in Costume Design and graduated with honors. I don't knit or crochet very often, but I can embroider and smock and perform many other arts in the needlework cannon.

Sewing

My degree is in Costume Design. I am a professional seamstress. In my undergrad I taught fellow students how to sew as part of a scholarship I received. My experience ranges from everyday wear to historical garments to fantasy creations.

Theater

My degree is in theatre. I have been a part of the business in some way or another for over 10 years, professionally for about 5 years. I taught theatre summer camps for many years and loved it. I coached the children with their acting, analysis, techniques, as well as other aspects of creating a show.
