I specialize in creating fun and personal lessons designed to meet your needs. I also insist on speaking only English during my lessons, as it is the continuous use of the language that will best help my students succeed in their own goals. When I’m not teaching, I enjoy spending time with my wife and traveling the world. I look forward to learning with you!

The IELTS is my favorite of all the standardized English exams! I've helped many students learn about and practice for the IELTS. I understand how the test functions and what the evaluators are looking for when assessing soft skills (i.e. writing and speaking). I have even helped students score as high as a 7.0 on the exam (high enough to be accepted into Harvard and equal to a 100 on the TOFEL).

Knowledgeable and patient tutor!

I strongly recommend Matt as an English tutor. He had helped me in conversation, writing and listening skills. He is a great and patient teacher. He knows a lot about grammar and made me feel comfortable and more confident about my learning. He encourages and adapts the process of learning in order to keep us motivated. As an advanced student, motivation is an important tool to keep us improving. He has tried his best to teaches exactly what I needed and always asks if we would like to do something differently. He is flexible and understands when we have any difficulty about the schedule. Dear Matt, thank you very much for your help.

Good adviser, but not a professional tutor.

I had taken 2 classes with Matt (2.5 h total) And here is what I think: I would not recommend Matt as a tutor that can coach you for taking the Toefl exam if you are aiming to score 100+ like me. I have a strong feeling that if Matt had to take a ToeFL exam himself he would not get a 100+. In the first class (1.5 h) he spent time talking about the stuff not related to the exam. Eventually after 1.5h we did not finish writing even a half of the essay. After the class ended I was not able to get that half of the text that I wrote on Wyzant dashboard and Matt did not save it as well. I felt that time was wasted. I decided to give us a second chance, this time we scheduled for 1 hour. Same happened in this 1 hour. Again, I was not able to retrieve the text a wrote, Matt did not save it too. A well as Matt did not: 1) point out any grammatical mistakes or sentence structure from the 2 essays I sent him in the beginning of our classes, same with both "half Essays" that we wrote together during both classes. 2) give any clear home work assignments and set up "what we do for the next class" 3) help me with any reading questions that I sent him over, where I had struggled to understand "Why this is the correct" answer. Instead he talked for 20mins about the fact that every student should find his own way to approach reading section. Yes, Matt knows how the exam is structured and can talk hours about this, however I'm not taking a 3rd chance. I need a tutor that can work fast and efficient with students.

Tutor responded:

I tutored Kristina for two lessons after we had a free phone call to answer any of her questions. I could tell Kristina wasn’t completely satisfied with our two lessons, but she did not share any more specific feedback with me during or after our lessons before she wrote this review. I have a few responses to what she said: 1. I have helped students achieve a 100 on the TOFEL before her as well as the equivalent on the IETLS. 2. I explained my methodology to Kristina before we started our lessons. She knew we would spend time getting to know each other during our first lesson and we wouldn’t spend as much time on TOFEL materials. I told her that we needed to get to know each other so we could work better together. I do this will all my students, and I make no exceptions. She agreed to this and I even shortened how much time we spent getting to know each other for her so we could spend more time on TOFEL practice. 3. I was very flexible with Kristina like I am with all of my students: I gave her extra free time when she arrived late to our first lesson and I worked with her schedule. I even tutored her while she was on vacation even though she didn’t have a good Internet signal. 4.Our second lesson was more difficult than our first because she was in a different country, her Internet connection wasn’t good, and she messaged a dozen additional questions right before the class began. It was a lot to handle for only one hour but I tried my best. 5. I do teach students to modify some techniques that I give them. This is because each student is different and it is very possible for students to use two slightly different approaches to achieve the same goal. 6. Kristina was correct about the slides. I did not explain how to download the slides from the lesson during our first lesson. If she had asked, I would have told her how to do it. I will explain this to more students in the future. Not every tutor is right for every student. I treat each student as a unique person and I create specific lessons for them. This takes time but leads to better results and more satisfied students. Students that are unhappy with this method might be happier using a standardized course from a school or tutoring center.

Knowledgeable and well prepared tutor.

I'm preparing to TOEFL with Matt. So far I like it. Matt is well prepared for each lesson and walks me through all requirements for each TOEFL session. I like that he asks me every time what I did well and what I did good. This helps me to improve and think how I can improve. Plus he gives me valuable feedback which is very crucial for me, especially for the speaking session. I recommend Matt!

Very student oriented teacher!!!

I chose Matt as my TOEFL teacher first but after couple of lessons I decided to change it into IELTS classes. I asked him to help me for the IELTS exam (just because I come from the Eastern European country IELTS was more familiar to me). As a result I got quite decent score 7.0 and I am very satisfied with it. I can undoubtedly recommend Matt as a very well organized, punctual and honest teacher!!! He has a strong desire to give you a profound knowledge. Besides that one particular thing what I really like about him is that he has clear understanding of what international students need for achieving their goals!!!
