About Scott

I think I bring a unique combination of skills to the role of tutor/teacher, and I believe these skills are at least as important as having expertise in the subjects themselves. To list them briefly: I enjoy working with learners of all ages; I have excellent communication skills; I have a good supply of patience; I am flexible in terms of processes, methods, and types of learning (and learners); my subject-knowledge is based on both textbook sources and real-world experience; and, finally: I have a deep interest in, and a lot of experience using, the tools and techniques of metacognition, or “learning how to learn”. I would like to expand just a bit on these ideas, especially metacognition. However, I should take a moment to describe my relevant past experience and list the subjects for which I am most qualified.

I have experience teaching and tutoring most age groups in both a professional and a personal capacity. Professionally, I have spent most of my 20+ year career as executive for, and one of the founders of, a software development company. One of my primary responsibilities related to tutoring work was to find, hire, and grow the skills of the best programmers, analysts, and consultants possible. The analyst role in technology consulting requires a tremendous amount of critical thinking, strong people skills, excellent writing skills, and the ability to learn new material rapidly.

As a few more examples of my tutoring-related experience, I have: written manuals and developed curriculum; taught classes at several age levels (NOT as a licensed teacher, but as volunteer and guest lecturer, or at request of a client); and, for several projects and clients I have created and deployed online learning software. Coincidentally, one of my larger projects was designing, developing, and managing the Florida Online Tutoring system - an experimental system/service providing free tutoring and homework help to public school students across the State. It was a big success, but sadly, funding was cut several years ago.

What subjects do I teach? I have a good general knowledge of most subjects covered by WyzAnt, but my expertise is in computer-use, business software, programming, computer science, and similar technology-related subjects. On the other side of things entirely, my personal interests and expertise are in the humanities; in particular: history (world, European, American, etc.), Philosophy (epistemology, ethics, philosophy of science, etc.), and social studies. I also teach, and have spent a long time honing my own skills, in the subjects of writing, critical reading, and editing for academic, personal, and business purposes.

Another subject I am both qualified to teach and LOVE to teach is metacognition: learning to learn. This brings us full circle to the topic introduced at the beginning: the unique combination of skills which inform my particular approach to learning. My skills, my experience, and my approach are all in support of a truth about learning that I believe must be recognized: that are many different, and correct, ways to learn. I have seen first hand over the years that there is no "one right way" to teach a particular subject to a particular individual. This led to my interest in metacognition and for many years, and I had the good fortune of being able to practice, evaluate, and implement different metacognitive techniques in both my professional and personal lives. If it is in line with your goals, I can help you learn how YOU learn best and help you get better at it. Learning to learn is something that can be taught and worked on by itself, or as one aspect of learning any specific subject. What is most important to me as a tutor, however, is that we develop a plan to meet your specific goals; whether that requires a one-time, one-hour session to get help with a few quick questions; or a long-term plan to help you master an entire subject; or anything in between.

I am available immediately for all qualified subjects on WyzAnt for both in-person (locally) and online lessons. If this sounds good to you after all that text, thank you — and thank you for persevering this far! I hope to hear from you. Regardless, I hope you find the help you are looking for; knowing when you need some assistance (and then doing something about it) is, indeed, half the battle.

Cheers,
Scott S.

Random Nerd Fact About Me: I have had a lifelong passion for books, learning, and teaching and a few years ago I reached a goal that I had kept near and dear to my heart since I was eight years old: I built a place to house my library, in my own home. I have accumulated a personal library of approximately 5,000 volumes dedicated to the study of history, philosophy, social science, political science, writing, and computers & technology. It has taken me half a lifetime to create this library, but I use it every day, and can't imagine life without it. The resources of my library are at my student’s disposal, which can be particularly helpful the deeper one gets into a subject (the Internet is a fantastic resource, but beyond the beginning levels of most subjects, material is required not easily found, or found at all on the Internet.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Computer Programming

I have a Bachelor's of Science in Computer Science, graduating Magna Cum Laude from Florida State University. At FSU I learned to program in Pascal, C, C++, Assembler, and Scheme (a Lisp-like functional language). Subsequently, I helped to found a software development company in Tallahassee, Florida (1995). I was a full-time programmer/part-time everything else the first several years. Over course of my career I have hired and trained programmers, and was directly responsible for designing, overseeing development, quality assurance, and project management for numerous custom software systems.

I have spent the last four years in a variety of activities, but chief among them are two: (1) learning the Lua programming language, in which I am now proficient; and (2) development and publishing of the online store site: www.scullgear.com. For student who need detailed help in a language I do not know, I would defer to tutors that have the expertise in the particular languages if possible. For programming principles and programming in any language, I feel I am very educated and knowledgeable from the academic as well as business worlds.

Computer Science

I have a Bachelor's of Science in Computer Science, graduating Magna Cum Laude from Florida State University. I co-founded a software development company in Tallahassee, Florida in 1995 and was a Senior VP there for 17 years, helping to grow it into a 10+ million (revenue/year) business. During that time I personally programmed full-time for five years; hired and trained programmers for 15 years; and, was directly responsible for designing, overseeing the development of, and ultimately delivering custom software systems to clients through the United States.

Macintosh

I have been working in a mixed Windows/Mac OS environment for almost a decade. I have been running my consulting business and all personal computing on Apple's platform for the last four years. I use an iMac as my personal machine for development; I manage a network with that iMac and a Macbook Pro, an Airbook, four iPhones, and two iPads on a daily basis. I am very knowledgeable of the Mac OS in general, and am proficient in all the core apps and many of the common programs run on the Mac OS: Scrivener, Pixelmator, ABBY OCR, Avast, iWorks and Office for Mac, etc.

Microsoft Excel

I have over 15 years of experience with Excel and think it's one of the most versatile programs ever made. It's easy to learn to use for everyday needs, and robust enough to do some very complex work. I've used it for hundreds and hundreds of projects and tasks and have not been disappointed.

A few brief examples: I used multiple, linked spreadsheets to handle all billing, payroll, and corporate performance metrics for my 150+ employee business. I created a complex compensation model entirely in Excel for a world-renowned law firm (Holland & Knight) with ~$500M in annual revenues - it worked well enough that it was still in use 10 years later! The most rewarding project of my career was using Excel make a real difference in people's lives: in partnership with the state of Florida, I created a capacity model that for the first time specifically identified the type and amount of all the computer, human, and physical resources needed to continue functioning in the event of a catastrophic hurricane; this was completed shortly before the worst hurricane season in history, with destruction actually rising to the levels contemplated in the project. But the state was ready.

More important for those reading this is that I have taught many people from a multitude of professions and with many disparate needs to use Excel and get the most out of it for _them_. I'm passionate about this because you will accomplish more, and do it better, WITHOUT having to shell out all the time for new software, hardware, or consultants.
