Florida State University (History)
Brandeis University (Master's)
During my five years of post-secondary education, I have developed a passion for helping others learn. During my years at Florida State University I provided tutoring and writing help to members of the community. As a Magna Cum Laude Graduate of the Honors program and a completer of major research projects, I have the skills necessary to help other students learn and enhance their own abilities. Further, I know how important an education is for success. As an undergraduate I was selected by the Dean of Undergraduate studies to lead a class of freshman students, where I sharpened my teaching skills. My students in this course, as well as those that I helped in a tutoring capacity, have praised me for my ability to break down difficult ideas and creative methods of explaining them based on their preferred method of learning.
As a graduate student at Brandeis University I was hired as a teaching assistant for one of the university's special programs. In this role I learned many exciting methods for teaching and was able to implement them in my own lesson plans. This role also required that I serve as a writing tutor for students on a weekly basis, again strengthening my skills as a communicator and teacher. Additionally, Brandeis prides itself on its rigorous graduate curriculum. This training has enhanced my own general knowledge, which will allow me to better serve students in the Tallahassee area.
As a historian, much of my academic work has been writing intensive. I have completed two major writing/research projects along with countless other essays. For the past year I have also had three pieces of writing published through the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. I am prepared and qualified to review writing assignments and research papers with students of all ages and grade levels. Through my work as a writing tutor, I have come especially effective at helping students identify thesis and outline papers. Reading comprehension is an integral component in writing, so I am equally as capable to provide help with ACT and SAT comprehension skills.
History is a subject that most students dread. However, as a historian I find the subject to be fascinating. This love of the subject positions me to be an excellent tutor of all historical subject areas, especially U.S. History. What I find to be effective as a teacher is focusing on the bigger picture in the historical narrative versus a mundane memorization of dates and places. Students who are struggling with general social studies courses, AP US History, AP government,or World History are encouraged to reach out to me as I am familiar with these courses and materials. This is my area of training and I know that I will help students find success in its study.
Please reach out to me if you have any questions about my qualifications or services. I hope to meet you in the future and hopefully share my passion for education with you. Let me help you succeed! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
