About Dottie

I have been an elementary school teacher for 18 years. I love working with children and seeing the "light bulb" go on when they finally understand a concept. I will work with the classroom teacher to make sure I am meeting your child's needs and helping them to be more successful in the classroom. I also want to make sure I am supporting what they are learning in the classroom to reinforce what the teacher is teaching. We will try multiple strategies until we find the one that works best. I have tutored students in reading, writing and math. I have worked with students with disabilities as well. I I have been an elementary school teacher for 18 years. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

Students who have difficulty focusing for long period of times or are more active than the normal student often need to learn different strategies to help them be successful in the classroom. I have taught for 18 years and have had at least one student every year that has been diagnosed with this disorder. I also have a son that has ADHD and learned very quickly how to interact and help him with his homework.

Common Core

I am currently a classroom teacher in a public school. I am using the Common Core Standards in my classroom everyday. I am also using these standards at other grade levels of students that I tutor.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been teaching elementary education (K-5th) for 16 years. I hold a current valid teaching certificate in these areas.

Handwriting

I teach Kindergarten. During this year students are not only learning to identify the letter and it's sounds, they are also learning how to correctly write the letter. I work with them one on one to make sure they get it correct. I have also taught 1st grade where we continue to make sure we are writing letters correctly and using the lines on the paper correctly. When I taught 3rd grade, cursive handwriting became important as well. I taught student how to write the letters correctly in cursive. We worked diligently to make sure they wrote their letters legibly so their writing could be read by anyone.

Phonics

I have taught many different phonics methods. This area includes phonics, phonemic awareness, alphabetic knowledge and text awareness. I teach Kindergarten so I teach phonics everyday using multiple strategies to reach all my students. I look for a variety of ways to teach the different areas of phonics as each child learns differently. One way does not fit all students. Phonics is the basis for reading so it is the most important part of reading in the primary grades.

Special Needs

Students with learning disabilities often need different methods of learning. I have worked with students with all kinds of disabilities in my classroom. I have recently taught students with Asperger's, Autism, Vision (blind) as well as students Specific Learning Disabilities.
