About Bonita

Dear Potential Students and Your Families,

Hello! My name is Bonita D. I grew up many years ago in my home state of North Dakota. I grew up in my Grandparent's home where we lived 18 miles from The Three Affiliated Tribes Indian Reservation.

Therefore, I was blessed in being able to attend their colorful and very musical Pow Wow's on very special occasions. Little did I realize at that young age that later in my life I would actually begin to learn to speak Lakota, Sioux (the language of the South Dakota Plains Warriors).

My BS degree in Elementary Education with a Concentration in Multi-Culturalism was earned at The University of North Dakota at Grand Forks where I was one of two Anglo's in The North Dakota Bilingual Program. The program paid my tuition, books and provided a monthly stipend. Being a student in this program virtually got me my BS degree! I never did see the other Anglo student in this program.

My MA degree was earned at New Mexico State University at Las Cruces, NM. My MA degree is in Curriculum and Instruction with a Master's Minor in Special Education and with just as many ESL semester hours course work. An additional 15 semester hours in Second Language Acquisition were earned at The University of Texas at San Antonio, Texas.

My cultural orientation from the beginning was Norwegian and, then, Sioux. Later in my life, I added The Hispanic culture to my cultural orientations. My ethnic heritage is mostly Norwegian and I definitely carry the Norwegian work ethic, culture and values, as well as, a great appreciation for immigrant people, education, folk dancing and foods of all cultures.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

The very first aspect or important skill to acquire in learning a second language is the art of: Listening. Of course we all must learn the phonetics (the sounds of each alphabetical letter), & we combine reading & writing along with speaking because it simply all goes together in language learning.

Simple grammar rules do not have to be stressful, but, also, can be learned through the teacher's understanding of her own native language's grammatical rules by her innovative and creative methods/strategies & her welcoming attitudes of teaching a second language to immigrant people.

Pictures, as well as, body movements give us so much meaning. Music & Poetry & Rhyme combine together to help/assist language learning into fun activities.
