About Sue

I have realized over the years that learning is a serious business but on the other hand, it can also be fun. When a student realizes that learning is fun, then the retention rate skyrockets. I try to lead the student to grasp concepts in a way that eases the frustration and stress. It is not all fun and games but if one can bring learning to a level of understanding in which the student recognizes and grasps the concept as his or her own, then I feel like I have succeeded.

Although I have done extensive graduate work toward my doctorate degree, I remain grounded in the world of the child. To understand the processes of learning and find the proper key to open the lock on knowledge is my goal in tutoring. I want to see and hear success, the words, "Oh, I get it!"

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have had 8 years in teaching and tutoring; specifically, I have taught 6th grade math and reading for two years. Additionally, I have tutored elementary students (second, third, and fourth grades) in reading, grammar, composition and elementary math. My tutoring methods include leading the student to an understanding but never giving answers. Students learn when they are able to understand the underlying concepts and the knowledge becomes theirs.

My educational background is science. I have a Masters degree in science education and have done post graduate work in biomedical science. I also have all coursework completed at Florida State University for my doctorate in science education.

Zoology

If you are fond of learning extensive life cycles of the Animal Kingdom, then zoology is a niche of biology that will appeal to you. I have had undergraduate and graduate courses in zoology and feel qualified to help anyone who may have difficulty in this discipline.
