About Don

Music and language acquisition share the same space in the brain. Living in South Texas exposed me to the Spanish language and I dove headfirst into learning it. I am a fluent speaker, having lives and travelled abroad, majored in Mexican=American culture and minored both Latin American History and Spanish at UT Austin.

As a professional musician with 10 full length CDs on US and European record labels, including Walt Disney, a song publishing contract with Chrysalis BMG and a gift for learning many instruments as well as languages, I have taught hundreds of people, from 5-75, how to play music. My experience helps me to talk less and teach effectively. I specialize in voice, music production, songwriting, guitar, violin, mandolin, dobro, saxes, and single F French Horn.

I also tutor a variety of academic subjects, especially Spanish, social sciences, astronomy, English and creative writing. I promise you patience, all of my attention and a world of experience in my tutoring sessions

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I have a BA in Anthropology from The University of Texas at Austin. I graduated in 2002.

Composition (Music)

I am professional musician who has released 5 full length internationally distributed albums of original music. Also I was nominated for a GRAMMY in 1993 for best male country vocal performance of an original composition.

Ear Training

I am a GRAMMY-nominated musician whose studies have included 2 years of ear training courses to recognize musical intervals quickly and correctly in my work. I have taken what I learned and developed my own methodology to teach ear training to my music students. I use a series of chord scales on guitar to recognize intervals, as well as keyboard. These are burned onto CD for my students to practice learning at home. We work on I, iim, iiim, IV, V vi, vii diminished intervals over and over after having established the tonic. It has been very successful in helping my jazz guitar students to improvise comp chords without sheet music.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am certified k-12 in Special Education as part of my Certification in the Region XIII Alternative Teachers Certification Program. Additionally, I hold a BA for the University of Texas Austin. I have been certified in k thru 12, with the enhanced specialization in Special Education.

French Horn

In 8th grade, my band director moved me from alto sax to baritone sax, which I hated. My only solution was to take my lunch hour in the band rehearsal rooms where, over the course of two months or so, I taught myself to play the French Horn. I auditioned, was given the position of 2nd horn, 1st chair. I continued the French horn in school until high school graduation. I ended high school as 1st horn, 1st chair. So that gives me roughly 6 years of experience.

General Music

I have been a professional musician for 30 years. My work has taken me around the world. I have been a guest of the Queen of England and invited to perform at the Glasgow Mayfest where the BBC brought the trailer outfitted with a recording studio. My performance was recorded for syndicated rebroadcast on BBC2's "The Brand New Opry." As a headliner at the International Singer/Songwriter Festival in Frütigen, Switzerland, I was live simulcast on Swiss DDRS3. I have taught hundreds of people how to play guitar, singly and in groups. Additionally I have given lessons in contemporary songwriting, vocal performance, violin, jazz theory. On June 24, 1996, I was honored by the City of Austin naming that day in my honor for my contributions to the cultural experience of Austinites.

Guitar

I have played guitar for 47 years. 30 of those professionally. I teach jazz, blues, composition,
country and bluegrass. I have 5 albums with guitar as my primary instrument.

Literature

I began reading at age 4 and by age 6 I was reading Greek mythology. My life has been consumed by the written word. In college I drifted towards creative writing after having studied from classics to the modern novel. I actually even won a Creative Writing Contest at UT at Austin during my sophomore year. I am a professional songwriter in real life and have had my work featured in film, television as well as radios and record stores. Milton can be a tough read and I know I have the ability to help you clearly layout your paper. Please let me know what your schedule is, I will put everything aside to help you get your winning paper in on time.

Macintosh

I have 20 years of experience on Macintosh platforms using Word, Quark and Dreamweaver. I am comfortable optimizing Mac's to run PC programs as well as troubleshooting most Macintosh glitches. I have taught 15-20 people how to set up and use their Mac's through the years. I use both Mac and Pc in my home-based digital recording studio business, and am comfortable with making fairly advanced changes to their Operating Systems to insure audio streaming reliability.

Music History

I am a GRAMMY-nominated composer/musician with an encyclopedic knowledge of music, musicians, musical instruments, music theory which I use in my professional life. Academically, I studied the development of music in some 20+ hours of Folklore classes where we studied the development of prominent instrumentation, as well as instruments which have fallen by the wayside. Additionally, I studied the major composers, their works, from post-Renaissance to current day. Post-degree, I have studied the development of American popular music from Scots-Irish fiddle tunes and murder ballads to modern day jazz.

Music Production

I own and operate my own recording studio, in Stuart. Although once a commercial studio, it is now devoted solely for my songwriting demos and my CD material. I am fluent in CuBase, Halion Orchestra, midi, StudioOne, Cakewalk, ProTools, Ableton and Kontact. I teach people how to set up a home studio, what equipment to buy and recommend software.

Music Theory

As a composer and vocalist, I studied under a fantastic jazz musician who helped me with interval recognition, chord recognition and scale degrees. I worked with her for 2 years until I had absorbed what she had to teach me.

Reading

I began reading when I was 5 years old and was reading Greek mythology before I started school. I read around 1100 words per minute and have a photographic memory of the page. I distinctly recall deciding to to learn that when I was a child. No one taught me how, it was simply a conscious decision. I am a published writer and lyricist. My work has been featured in television and film as well as albums of music by myself and others. My song garnered a GRAMMY nomination for best song by a new artist in 1993, although it did not win. My hometown of Austin, Texas honored me by proclaiming a day in April as Don M. Day.

Saxophone

Eb Alto Saxophone is my first instrument. I began to study saxophone at age 11 and continued onto adulthood. I am a professional musician and play 7 instruments at a high level
of proficiency.

Sociology

My education has included some 36 hours of college level sociology courses, from survey to social problems, social statistics, sociology of the future, theoretical writings and more. Additionally, as my father is a published PhD in Sociology, I have been inundated with sociology my entire life.

Songwriting

I am a published songwriter. My songs have been used in TV, radio and film. My greatest honor was to have had 5 songs used in the Cinemax movie, "Certain Guys." I have worked with top writers in Nashville writing songs for various artists. I headlined at the Frütigen, Switzerland International Singer-Songwriter Festival in 1994. My songs are represented by Chrysalis Music and BMI. I have worked with many aspiring songwriters, as well as teaching group classes, to teach the insider tips to a hit song that I have learned.

Spanish

I am a fluent Spanish speaker with a degree in Mexican-American Culture from the University of Texas Dept of Anthropology. I have also lived in Mexico, Honduras and Guatemala. My degree included some 20 hours of Spanish courses. I have also written songs in Spanish which received
radio airplay on both sides of la frontera.

Study Skills

My qualifications are that I am able to teach the organizational skills of outline making, note taking, searching out the main points of a piece of reading, speed reading and condensing and jotting down notes which will speed up the process of studying for exams as well as everyday classes. I have a process which enabled me to work full-time, while juggling a full semester load of classes and graduating with a 3.5+ average.

Violin

A professional musician, I learned violin during the rehab of dual knee replacement in 2007. I am gifted in the acquisition of new musical instruments, especially stringed instruments, woodwinds and brass. I spend my time playing Scot-Irish traditional music, bluegrass, jazz and swing.

Voice (Music)

I am a singer. I write my own songs. In 1993, I was nominated for a GRAMMY award for a song I wrote and sang. I am an internationally-acclaimed vocalist and have the press clippings to prove it. I have given hundreds of vocal lessons and pride myself on helping you get "your" voice out.

World History

My minor at U. of Texas was History, especially Latin American history.

Writing

Winner of the Phi Theta Kappa University-wide Creative Writing Contest 1983, University of Texas at Austin. Nominated for GRAMMY. Published songwriter whose works have been in television, radio, film and radio. Headliner at The International Singer-Songwriter Festival. Former staff writer for Music City Texas monthly industry magazine.
