About L. Rain

I have taught at universities in Oklahoma and Michigan, as well as online. I have also taught within HeadStart as well as high school from California to Pennsylvania.

I am a Sutton Doctoral Fellow in English from the University of Oklahoma and winner of the First Book Award in the recent past. I am a widely published critical and creative writer, whose work has appeared in American Indian Culture and Research Journal, The Southern Literary Journal, Louisiana Folklife, Undead Souths: The Gothic and Beyond(LSU P), Tidal Basin Review, Natural Bridge, and many others.

I believe one-on-one tutoring and teaching opportunities are not only enriching for students but for instructors. Moreover, this opportunity allows for individualization of the learning process and how the material potentially relates to each individual. Knowing why something matters helps us acquire skill-sets in how we use, adapt, and learn knew materials.

I am a professional editor guaranteed to help students with writing and language arts. I have experience teaching and tutoring: Writing and Composition; American, British, and World Literature; Rhetorics; Ethnic Studies/Literature; American History and Western Civilization; Creative Writing; Great Books; and Yearbook.

I believe learning also means laughing. It is a community activity. Yes, we have a goal to acquire knowledge, but our acquisition and learning process is not in a vacuum. The more we relate and communicate— the more we make meaning of the skills, concepts, ideologies we seek to learn. If we can do it in a safe, fun, and friendly environment, that also pushes each of us to be be our best--- then all the better. These are the learning relationships I seek to cultivate.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
