I really enjoy working with students on an individual basis and in small group situations where I can focus on a child's unique learning style. I believe every child can learn and every child wants to be successful. I have extensive experience with reluctant learners, squirmy kids and hard to reach students. Discovering a child's learning style and helping her or him to be successful in school is my goal with Wyzant. I look forward to working with many promising students.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a certified teacher in grades 3 year - 3rd grade. I have taught in primary grades for 20 years. My last full time teaching position was in a kindergarten in Fairfax County Public Schools in Virginia from 2005-2010. I taught structured phonics lessons s and guided reading to 5 and 6 year olds during that time.
I have experienced success in helping students improve their study skills in my career as a special education teacher and tutor. During my graduate work in special education I learned how to help students focus on a subject for a short period of time and use highlighters, graphs, pictures and text clues to get the meat out of a reading sample in subject areas such as history, math,
social studies or in novels or other texts.
I worked with students on a daily basis as a special education teacher for 20 years, helping them improve their study skills. I helped students make note cards, games, puzzles, flash cards and use rhymes, songs and alliteration to prepare for quizzes and tests.
