I have a Master's degree in Counseling through the Department of Education. My work experience includes directing a pre-school and after-school program in which I provided curriculum supporting the lessons learned at public school. Additionally, I have worked in elementary through high school settings as a special education resource center director, classroom aide, and tutor. My interest and strength is with elementary and middle school students, particularly with those who need the extra attention, assistance, and the time to understand. I am especially competent in tutoring math and have a knack for being able to explain concepts in such a way that a student "gets" it. Working with students who are struggling with a particular subject and then realize that they truly understand the topic, is an amazing thing to witness.
I am a mother of two grown children. One found school easy and excelled in most anything he tackled. The other really had to work hard in school and would often get frustrated and give up. The challenge of working with him taught me skills on how to guide, but not do the work for him. To nudge and assist, allow him to work through it, and to finally get to that point of really understanding. The feeling of pride showing all over his face. The process is not always easy, but it sure is satisfying!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a Master's degree in Counseling, the mother of a special needs child with the primary issues being ADHD and reading comprehension, and worked for over 13 years at a residential treatment facility for youth with mental health issues severe enough to require residential treatment. Successfully helped youth figure out how to work with their issues and obtain strategies unique to them to meet the demands of school and life in general. I have tremendous patience and take different approaches with each youth I work with depending on their own particular needs and personalities.
Elementary and all math builds on a series of concepts. As a tutor, the important thing is to find at what point the disconnect happened and re-teach from there using individualized approaches. This includes hands on, paper exercises, instruction, and whatever other creative approaches I can come up with to have the math concept make sense.
