My name is Sophia. I have completed undergraduate degrees in both Mathematics and Music Performance (Percussion) from Rice University in Houston Texas. I have 7+ years of experience tutoring mathematics from elementary school all the way through the collegiate level. I have tutored subjects ranging from arithmetic, algebra, and geometry, to calculus and linear algebra. Additionally, I have helped prepare students for the ACT, SAT, AP, and ISEE tests. While at Rice University, I have completed the following relevant coursework: Calculus Sequence, Differential Equations, Partial Differential Equations, Geometry, Statistics, Number Theory, Complex Analysis, and Linear Algebra.
While math can oftentimes be really abstract, I like to try to use visual aids and tangible objects to help the student understand what’s going on. As a tutor I hope to not only explain how to solve individual problems, but also teach my students how to systematically break down any problem given to them, so that in the future they are self sufficient. Generally, I like to teach math with a very hands on approach. Depending upon my students' needs, I will spend a small portion of the time teaching new material in a lecture style, and then spend the rest of the time going through problems together to apply the new material. It is important to me that my students learn how to apply their knowledge to new situations, and I have found that the best way to do this is to go through problems together and discuss strategies (as opposed to strictly lecturing). My experience teaching has included various modes including in-person and remote instruction, and I am more than willing to figure out a suitable way for a student's unique situation using various easily accessible technologies.
Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions, I look forward to helping you not only understand, but enjoy the mathematical process!
