I am a life-long learner committed to helping you improve your performance. My parents were both educators and my wife is a former Teacher of the Year in our county and currently serves as a Principal. We have five children so we understand the various challenges faced by students and parents. I am a professional coach and an Adjunct Professor working with doctoral students in the College of Education and the College of Psychology and Behavioral Sciences. I hold four degrees: B. S. in Psychology (minors in the sciences and math), M.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies (Psychology/Education), Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry (emphasis on learning theory).

I can help elementary students with nearly any subject and middle school students with most subjects. I have completed upper level collegiate mathematics and physics courses and have worked with high school and college students as well. Writing well is often a struggle for students of all ages and I can help you improve your writing at all levels up to and including a doctoral dissertation.

I have worked with students who have a variety of learning disabilities (through the college level). I have worked with students who did not qualify to pass a grade and then, when retested, were able to move up to the next grade level.

I completed Calculus in high school and went on to take four additional math courses in college. There are many reasons why some people find math to be difficult and pinpointing the source and creating a memorable and repeatable process to successfully complete the problems is important. I love the sciences and completed two years of an Engineering program before changing majors. I have written a lot in my degree programs and in my professional life and enjoy helping others express themselves more clearly. My course work in Psychology allows me to both tutor in that area and better understand my students so that we can work together more effectively.

I have experience tutoring students from 1st grade through the college level. I have passed all of the tests required for certification as a teacher in the State of Florida. I have worked with home schooled students as well as students who were enrolled in virtual school. These students chose an alternative educational pathway for a variety of reasons - not being successful in a traditional classroom, involvement in an athletic endeavor at a very high level, religious or personal choice, etc. One of our sons experienced a back injury while growing up and I oversaw his home school education for a year until he was able to return to a traditional classroom. Our daughter is currently enrolled in online classes and she will complete at least 9th and 10th grade using this format.

Accommodation is made for their challenges and we work to find strategies which will help them be more successful. My doctoral dissertation focused on the Theory of Multiple Intelligences, Human Learning Theory and Brain-Based Learning in children. I conducted a research study involving hundreds of elementary school children. A goal was to help teachers find better ways to help each student learn and excel while recognizing that each student has different strengths and challenges. I am completing my third Abnormal Psychology course (second at the graduate level). ADD/ADHD is a diagnosis in the new Diagnostic and Statistical Manual 5 used by mental health professionals. I regularly work with students with ADD/ADHD and have also consulted with their mental health providers. I have worked with ADD/ADHD students in the K-12 and college settings.

Great Geometry Knowledge

Don N. was very kind and patient with my daughter. He was able to pick up on the difficulties she was having and made her feel confident with Geometry after 1 day of tutoring. Being a teacher himself was a huge plus. Not only did she gain confidence, but he is very creative with his teaching skills.

Tutor responded:

Shanyn, I appreciate your kind words. It was nice to meet you and your daughter. She seems like a good student with a bright future.

Awesome meeting

Don N was a pleasure to meet. Anyone that needs a tutor or mentor he is great. He gets that its all about balance and life choices. Awesome gentleman! Really glad we met him.

Ellen. Thank you for your kind words. It was great to meet you and your student today. You investment in him is obvious and his potential is clear.

Getting "A"s now thanks to Don!

Don has done a great job helping our 6 year old daughter. She is in Sarasota public schools in first grade. She has been struggling with mathematical concepts and reading comprehension. She brought home her first A on a math test and we were thrilled. Don even used chalk on the driveway to help illustrate mathematical concepts to our daughter. He is patient, highly-accomplished academically and most important of all - he knows how to teach! My wife and I would highly recommend Don if you or anyone in your family is struggling with any topic. I only wish we had called Don sooner.

Tutor responded:

Thank you for the nice comment. It has been fun to work with your daughter. She is full of personality and potential. It is great to see her learn new things. You can almost see the wheels spinning in her head when she is trying to figure things out.

Very knowledgeable. Very responsive and fully answered my needs.

I thank you Don for his great availability. I needed help on a very short notice. 10 minutes after his email we were online to work together on my assignment. He really helped me more than I thought it was possible. I felt very at ease and I appreciate that he reassured me. I appreciate greatly as well that he did not try to take advantage in any way of the urgency of my request like another tutor who raised his rates. In brief, I highly recommend this tutor.
