About Don

I am a life-long learner committed to helping you improve your performance. My parents were both educators and my wife is a former Teacher of the Year in our county and currently serves as a Principal. We have five children so we understand the various challenges faced by students and parents. I am a professional coach and an Adjunct Professor working with doctoral students in the College of Education and the College of Psychology and Behavioral Sciences. I hold four degrees: B. S. in Psychology (minors in the sciences and math), M.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies (Psychology/Education), Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry (emphasis on learning theory).

I can help elementary students with nearly any subject and middle school students with most subjects. I have completed upper level collegiate mathematics and physics courses and have worked with high school and college students as well. Writing well is often a struggle for students of all ages and I can help you improve your writing at all levels up to and including a doctoral dissertation.

I have worked with students who have a variety of learning disabilities (through the college level). I have worked with students who did not qualify to pass a grade and then, when retested, were able to move up to the next grade level.

I completed Calculus in high school and went on to take four additional math courses in college. There are many reasons why some people find math to be difficult and pinpointing the source and creating a memorable and repeatable process to successfully complete the problems is important. I love the sciences and completed two years of an Engineering program before changing majors. I have written a lot in my degree programs and in my professional life and enjoy helping others express themselves more clearly. My course work in Psychology allows me to both tutor in that area and better understand my students so that we can work together more effectively.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

Three of our children have attended or are currently attending college. We have walked them through the college selection process. I have attended six institutions of higher learning. I have worked with several students regarding the university they will attend. Parents have asked me to talk with their children about colleges and how to select an institution as well as a major. I am certified in the DISC human behavior/personality profile and use that to help students narrow down the number of possible careers. I am an Adjunct Professor at a university and work with graduate/doctoral students to clarify their goals and meet them.

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold four academic degrees (B.S. Psychology, M.A. Interdisciplinary Studies (Psychology/Education), Master of Divinity, Doctor of Ministry. My undergraduate degree includes minor-level concentrations in math and physics so I am comfortable with math and science as well as with social studies. My wife and I have five children and we have successfully gotten them through elementary school. My wife is an elementary school Assistant Principal and former Teacher of the Year in our county. I conducted a research study in my doctoral program using a population of students from a public elementary school. I have worked with a number of elementary students helping them with their homework. I meet the qualifications to be a substitute teacher in the county where I live at all grade levels. My parents were both educators as is a cousin and a daughter-in-law. I am an Adjunct Professor working with doctoral students in the College of Education, many of whom are teachers and school-based educators working with students every day. I have passed many background checks due to my involvement working with children. My wife and I have had extensive involvement with the child welfare system because we have served as foster parents and adoptive parents.

Elementary Math

I completed Calculus 1 in high school and Calculus 2 and 3 and Differential Equations in college. I have worked with statistics, both as a doctoral student and now as an instructor of doctoral students. I have worked in math with a first grader through college students in College Algebra.

Elementary Science

I completed two years of Engineering school before changing majors. I completed high level mathematics course work in college. I love science and have read extensively in the area. I have worked with elementary students in most subject areas. I recently passed testing required for certification as a teacher.

I scored a 1490 on the old version of the GRE (710 out of 800 Verbal; 780 out of 800 Math).

Proofreading

I have written a lot of papers while completing one undergraduate degree, two Master's degrees and a Doctorate. I also review papers for doctoral students in my role as an Adjunct Professor. I turn around the papers quickly and can provide both written feedback and a conversation via Skype.

I hold an undergraduate degree is Psychology (voted Outstanding Psychology Student) and a Master's degree with a focus in Psychology (Psychology/Education). I have also studied psychology, counseling and working with people in crisis. I serve as an Adjunct Professor and work with doctoral students in the College of Behavior Sciences and the College of Education.

Public Speaking

I have a Master of Divinity (90 semester hours) from Asbury Theological Seminary and a Doctor of Ministry from Columbia Theological Seminary. I am an ordained United Methodist minister and served as a pastor for 17 years. I took two public speaking classes as an undergraduate and three preaching classes in graduate school. I preached almost every Sunday when serving as a pastor. I have been a coach/consultant for the past ten years and have conducted over 100 training events and workshops during that time. I work with people to help them improve their public speaking.

Religion

I have a Master of Divinity (90 hours) from Asbury Theological Seminary and a Doctor of Ministry from Columbia Theological Seminary. I am an ordained United Methodist minister and served as a pastor for 17 years.

SAT Math

I completed Calculus 1 in high school and Calculus 2 and 3, Differential Equations and Statistics in college. I tutor through College Algebra.

Social Studies

I hold an undergraduate degree in Psychology and a Social Studies Divisional major. I have a Master's degree in Interdisciplinary Studies (Psychology/Education). My other degrees involve study in religion, history, education, leadership, philosophy and more. My father has two degrees in Social Studies Education so I was raised with an appreciation of social studies and a hunger to better understand people and how they interact.

Study Skills

I have worked with many students to help them refine the study skills which are important for success. As a certified coach, I try to understand my clients and customize an approach suitable for them. I have done this with my children as they have gone through school and each one was a little bit different. I have worked with elementary age children as well as doctoral students so I am competent across a large span of ages and educational levels. I have an undergraduate degree, two Master's degrees and a Doctorate so I have had to hone my own study skills in order to do well in these programs while also working and raising a family.

Writing

I have written a large number of papers completing an undergraduate degree, two Master's degrees and a doctorate. I have worked with students of all ages to help them improve their writing.

Great Geometry Knowledge

Don N. was very kind and patient with my daughter. He was able to pick up on the difficulties she was having and made her feel confident with Geometry after 1 day of tutoring. Being a teacher himself was a huge plus. Not only did she gain confidence, but he is very creative with his teaching skills.
