Education is my passion! Nothing thrills me more than unlocking the brain of one who is 'stuck' and getting to see the 'light-bulb' of understanding switch on. My work experience ranges from middle school through college level students in the academic areas of Math, English, Science and College Test Prep, primarily the ACT. Throughout my teaching and tutoring career, I strive to teach both inductively and deductively so that all learners can be reached.
My undergraduate degree is in Mathematics with a minor in science; the graduate degree is in communications. During my almost 5 decades in education, I've taught the following courses: General Math, Alg. 1, Geom., Alg. 2, Pre Calc, College Alg. Statistics; Earth-Space Sci., Phys. Sci.; English 9 Honors, Speech; Marketing Communications (college); assorted HS courses for the hospital/home-bound; and recently designed and currently teach an ACT Prep Course (offered through College to HS students).
My experience includes a wide range of students and instructional settings: standard high school and college classroom; home-school; hospital/home-bound; one-on-one tutoring; on-line virtual school and small group. This year I was asked to design and teach an ACT test preparation course for a local university. That course is ongoing and receives consistently high evaluation grades and positive feedback from the students.
Multi-sensory learning is a fabulous way to imprint new material into the brain! Students learn how to use multi-sensory approaches to their advantage. They learn how to 'unblock' the brain, especially during stressful testing situations. And they come to realize that they really CAN do math~ it's just a matter of finding the right approach to their learning style, and plugging the earlier foundation holes that exist for many.
If you are having an educational 'challenge', I would be happy to work with you to resolve that. It is a honor for me to work to ensure your educational success. It is my passion. It is my joy. Let me help you make it your joy as well. Please, feel free to contact me to discuss any questions your might have. Education is my passion! Jo-Ann focused today on a chapter review that Torin is turning in on Thursday, as there were a few problems of which he was uncertain. She went over the "why" of each and tried to make sure he understood the concepts. We are going to be flexible in our approach to the tutoring for now and just address needs as they arise. The school year is just starting, so we'll see what's needed as time goes on. We found Jo-Ann to be very calm and patient, and we were very pleased with our first session.
Jo-Ann was very professional. My son enjoyed her tutoring. We are looking forward to our next tutoring class. My son did enjoy the way Jo-Ann explained to him the problem and he is looking forward his next class.
She was on time and had a great way to talk to my son.
Thanks for helping Jake! It was very helpful to him with his geometry work. He will look forward to his next session on Wednesday. Jo-Ann was very patient and pleasant.
Our daughter had hit a wall in pre-algebra and was very frustrated with her results and the experience she was having in class. Jo-Ann helped her scale that wall almost without effort and in a very minimum amount of time (4 lessons) her scores went from C to A. She's timely, efficient and very good at what she does. Highly recommended.
Jo-Ann tutored my 14 daughter for the first time in algebra and organization skills and she found her very helpful. She wants Jo-Ann to come back again!
Jo-Ann H is working with my daughter to help increase her ACT score. She offered many helpful hints and helped my daughter work through some problems that she made tiny mistakes on but enough to come up with the wrong answer. Hoping after a few more sessions we will see an increase on the next test. Jo-Ann is a very nice and patient person, my daughter was comfortable with her and is looking forward to their next session together.
Great job teaching my daughter techniques and different ways to see algebra - has opened her eyes on many things that have been taught in a complicated way in her school math class - Thank you Jo-Ann
Jo-Ann was great. She began the lesson by educating me on how I can help myself in the future through proven math websites. She really cares about my ability to enjoy learning.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
