About John

As a young boy, I had a learning disability. I was a slow learner and required extended time on my tests. Since I learned differently from other students, I needed extra help. This "help" came in the form of several outstanding tutors. Whether it was proofreading a paper or cramming for an algebra test, my academic success is because of their efforts. They are the reason I went into education.

I have been tutoring since 2010, and began professionally tutoring in 2011. Most of my experience is tutoring international students (my Master's is in Applied Linguistics, which is a fancy way of saying "teaching English as a second language"). In my opinion, these are students who face language barriers not dissimilar to what I faced growing up. In a way, I know precisely what they are going through: lacking the proper vocabulary, unsure if a sentence is phrased correctly, or even if the tone is appropriate. I see myself in these students because I asked the same questions they do: "What is a thesis statement? How do I write one, let alone a good one?"

I know there are students who are just like me. They are smart but just need a little more attention. Together, the first step is to create goals. Next, we will develop strategies to help us reach those goals. Then the student will do the necessary task with supervision from the tutor (me!). Lastly, a review of the material learned will commence so that the information fossilizes.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary Math

I passed the WyzAnt Math Test to qualify as an Elementary Math tutor.

ESL/ESOL

I have a Master's Degree in Applied Linguistics with a focus on teaching English as a second language. I worked for four years as an ESL/ESOL tutor for international students at University. In addition, I have taught six ESL/ESOL classes at a State College.

Grammar

I worked for four years at the University of South Florida as a Grammar Tutor while pursuing my degree. I have professional and volunteer experience teaching grammar and writing to students both young and old. For me, Grammar is not about rules that need to memorization - instead, grammar is about style. My passion is helping students understanding their own style as well as recognizing the requirements of a specific assignment.

IELTS

I have a Master's Degree in Applied Linguistics with a focus on teaching English as a second language. I worked with international students for four years at the University of South Florida by helping them prepare of the IELTS test. I am familiar with the requirements of the four sections of the IELTS: reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

Public Speaking

I have a Master's Degree in Applied Linguistics with a focus on teaching English as a second language. I worked for four years at the University of South Florida as an English tutor for international students. Many student would come to me for speaking practice, and this included how to speak publicly for school presentations. Together, the student(s) and me would review scripts, PowerPoint presentation, and rehearse the speeches. We would discuss important public speaking elements: eye contact, speech rhythm, intonation, body posture, and the cliche formula of "say what you're going to tell them, tell them, and then tell them what you told them".

Study Skills

I have both professional and volunteer experience in working with students young and old to improve their study skills. Everything depends on creating goals. Achieving small goals (learning to spell a certain word, memorizing math formulas) builds the momentum for achieving big goals (reading comprehension, solving word problems). I would not have been able to complete graduate school without my study skills!

TOEFL

I have a Master's Degree in Applied Linguistics with a focus on teaching English as a second language. I worked for four years as a TOEFL tutor for international students at the University of South Florida. I am familiar with the TOEFL's four sections of Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening.

Writing

I am a writing instructor at a community college and a certified tutor. I have helped improve essays and personal statements since 2011. Writing is a skill, which means that it can be improved upon!

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

John started our lesson with the basic key factors in writing, to target my weakness. He was very enlightening in the first lesson, I immediately scheduled two (2) more lessons.
