About Valanee

Bio

There are many writers who do not know how to teach, but I love doing both. I am a published poet and author who has taught English composition at every level for over twenty years. I once had a University English 101 student who recommended my class to her friend. She said, "If there is an ounce of creativity in you, she will pull it out." My second language students especially like me because I am not only able to calm their fears about writing in English, but I offer guidance that helps...

There are many writers who do not know how to teach, but I love doing both. I am a published poet and author who has taught English composition at every level for over twenty years. I once had a University English 101 student who recommended my class to her friend. She said, "If there is an ounce of creativity in you, she will pull it out." My second language students especially like me because I am not only able to calm their fears about writing in English, but I offer guidance that helps their unique voice shine through.

My experience includes teaching English composition at the college level and teaching developmental writing as well. My undergraduate degree is in Elementary Education, and I was once hired to create and implement an adult literacy program. I have worked with both children and adults at all levels of writing.

I hold a Master of Fine Arts Degree in creative writing with a secondary emphasis in Rhetoric and Composition. Rhetoric is the art of persuasive writing, and I am classically trained. My goal in teaching both narrative (the story) and expository (the essay) writing is to help my students learn not only the rules of grammar, but to go beyond that to present a correct and compelling piece of writing.

I sincerely believe there is no such thing as a "born writer." At least, that is not the case for me. I was born with a love of writing, and it is because I have had encountered the same problems my students face that I have found many of the answers to my writing students' questions.
