About Lori

Reading! Children that struggle with "understanding the code" really hate having to try to do it, but once they understand how it works, they discover the love of reading! Cracking the code is the first step! After "getting" the code, students need to know what to do next to understand what the words mean.

After graduating from USF with a degree in special and elementary education, I realized that I truly did not know how to teach reading. I made it my mission to understand the reading process and work with kids on their level to ensure their skill development. This was accomplished by going back to school and getting my masters degree as a reading specialist.

Working with kids that need reading and organization support has been my passion for years. Students that need help getting organized in their thinking, input and output, environment and their body is something that I have been passionate about. Many times, students struggling with reading/language arts have other things going on that are stopping their progress. We work together to figure out the student's needs and how they learn best to come up with a learning plan that works!

One of the first things we will do as a part of the first session is evaluate exactly what the student and parent goals are, what could be blocking success and what as worked in the past. A tool that will be used during this evaluation is a Qualitative Reading Inventory to determine the student's reading level and where they are miscuing to come up with a strong intervention strategy.

Children want to be successful. With the right interventions, strategies and support, they can be!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

A degree in Special Education as well as working with students with ADHD since 1994 have provided me with practical experience in working with these students. Frequently, students with ADD/ADHD are disorganized and impulsive. Providing step by step instruction regarding expectations and how to be successful is a great way to empower a student in this situation. Students receive tips, tools and techniques on how to be successful in academic, social and home situations. They become aware of themselves and their environment, as well as their impact on their environment and the environment's impact on them!

Aspergers

Providing appropriate role modeling for social situations and appropriate responses is essential for working with students with Aspergers. Expanding their understanding of a subject and stretching themselves is a challenge but very doable with the appropriate support.

Elementary (K-6th)

Working toward my degree at USF for Special Education, I took additional courses to be an elementary teacher. A majority of my earlier experience was with young children and elementary aged children rather in special or regular education.

Public Speaking

Eye contact, tone of voice and body language are all essential skills to master in public speaking. Being a DTM in Toastmasters and being the facilitator for the Youth Leadership Program through Toastmasters has given me the skills to help students gain self confidence in Public Speaking and presentation skills.

Special Needs

Working with young children, I realized they had bigger needs than I was capable of working with, so I went to college to get my degree in Special Education. I worked with children ranging from K - 5th grade with varying disabilities such as Autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, and mentally challenged.
