I'm Melissa. I have a Bachelor's and a Master's in Psychology from the College of William and Mary, where I graduated Cum Laude. I have also completed the coursework in the Elementary Education Master's program at the University of Virginia's Curry School of Education. I have a passion for learning and helping others learn. In school and in my experience, the best teachers are the ones who make material fun and exciting, as well as relevant to the interests of the individual student. I am willing to go the extra mile to help my students understand and master the difficult concepts that can be presented in school.

For the past 5 years I have been working in education as a teacher, tutor, substitute teacher, and instructional aide in both Florida and Virginia. I have worked with all grade levels Pre-K through Undergraduate. I specialize in tutoring Math, Reading, and Writing at the elementary, middle, and high school levels, particularly Elementary Math and Algebra 1. I have worked both in the schools during direct instruction time and in an after school setting.

I believe in a direct approach to learning. I work directly with my students, setting goals that are specific, measurable, realistic, and time bound. I let the students take the lead in the tutoring sessions, seeing what they already know and determining how I can best support their learning. I believe in making learning fun, so I try to use examples that are entertaining and relevant to my students, to help maintain their interest. By making learning relevant, I help students see things they enjoy in their studies, which makes them more likely to be involved and engaged in the learning process. I also like to use games to help in my teaching, because games have been shown to be effective. I like to find the right balance of learning and play when using games, as play is one of the main languages of children. It is my hope that I can share my enthusiasm for learning with as many students as possible, helping them learn and excel in ways they never thought possible. Please send me a message if you have any questions. I respond quickly, and I am always willing to speak with you about your tutoring needs!
