About David

I recently retired from New York where I taught Advanced Placement U.S. History and Special Education at Washingtonville High School for thirty three years. I love what I do and that is evidenced by my present involvement with students and staff at Eckerd College, where I have been an Educational Consultant and Academic Coach since 2013.
During my tenure in New York I assumed the role of small town school teacher. I was thoroughly involved with all aspects of school life and advised various clubs and events. My teaching career has been varied and almost split in half. I spent eighteen years teaching U.S. History to our Special Education population and my last thirteen years I taught AP U.S. History until my retirement. My teaching duties also included teaching a course for Syracuse University called Public Affairs. This was a Political Science course in which students were tasked with identifying local social issues and developing workable plans to ameliorate the issue.
Upon moving to St. Petersburg I launched my Online Buschistory program. It is a web based U.S. History course designed to supplement traditional instruction.
Still seeking to be actively involved with students, I began my present position at Eckerd College as an Academic Coach and Educational Consultant in August 2013. By my design, this is a volunteer position. It has allowed me to adapt my learning strategies in a college environment and to help college students improve and better prepare for life. It has been a successful venture and many students have improved as a result of my workshops and alternative approaches.

MS in Education with extensive coursework in reading and writing instruction. Adjunct instructor at Syracuse University. The course I taught had an extensive writing component. 18 years as a Special Education teacher allowed me the opportunity to work extensively with students to develop their literary, reading, and writing skills. I am currently at Eckerd College where one of my many roles is to help students develop their writing skills.

I am College Board certified as an AP US History teacher. During my time as an AP teacher my students received superior scores on the AP US History exam. The State of Arkansas has adopted my online history course to be used in their distance learning program.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I possess an MS in Special Education with 36 years experience as a classroom teacher. During my tenure I have worked with a wide variety of students. ADD/ADHD requires a specific set of individualized practices to develop academic success. Each student is unique. Presently I am working at Eckerd College with a population that includes ADD/ADHD students.

Autism

I possess an MS in Special Education with 36 years experience as a classroom teacher. During my tenure I have worked with a wide variety of students. Autism is a learning difference not a handicap. When you know one Autistic student - you know one autistic student. Each student requires a unique strategy. My experience has been with Autistic teenagers within a highly competitive academic setting.

Dyslexia

I possess an MS in Special Education with 36 years experience as a classroom teacher. During my tenure I have worked with a wide variety of students.

Dyslexia is a very most common Learning Difference. Strategies to improve reading and writing must extend into daily life and routines.

Special Ed. teachers are specifically trained to remediate students with Dyslexia.
