As a patient and experienced teacher, I focus on building strong content comprehension in both informational and literary texts and helping students develop strong writing skills. Additionally, I take the time to establish positive learning relationships with students so they succeed.
I have my master's degree in Exceptional Student Education and am certified in English and Exceptional Student Education. My background includes teaching or tutoring students in Title 1 to Honors classes, from elementary to high school and working as a professional writer and editor for more than 17 years. I have helped both struggling and excelling students succeed with their academic goals.
My approach to tutoring students is to meet them at their level academically (and with a sense of humor) and then work to expand their knowledge, understanding, and ability to apply what is learned. Areas of specialty include, but are not limited to, identifying text evidence, main ideas, author's purpose, inference, and context clues in reading and organization and execution of all types of writing such as effective argumentative, explanatory, and persuasive essays and papers from elementary to college level.
I believe every student is unique, so I shape lessons to the individual needs of the student, making sure that he or she is comfortable and not overwhelmed. Plus, because I'm absolutely passionate about the language arts, I have a positive attitude and lots of enthusiasm that often rubs off on students.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a master's degree in exceptional student education and have taught numerous students with ADD and ADHD. I often use kinesthetic approaches to learning and learning activities that involve movement to help such as TPR (total physical response).
I know how to break up lessons and chunk learning material so that students can focus more effectively.

I have a master's degree in exceptional student education and recognize that "special needs" vary greatly among students. Depending on the student's needs, I am trained to use strategies to help him/her achieve success. These strategies can range from teaching students to work with dictation software/apps for writing, providing tips for decoding and reading, developing graphic organizers to help with comprehension, physically "acting" out material for better understanding, strategies for learning vocabulary, etc.
