About Jessica

I graduated from Eckerd College in 2012 with three degrees: History, American Studies (honors), and Psychology. I continued my education at University of South Florida in the field of History. However, that master's is currently on hold due to having to complete course to obtain my Professional Teaching Certificate and finish a second master's at Capella University. In 2018 (hopefully 2017) I will have completed my Master's of Science in Education with a specialization in reading at Capella University. I am also currently taking classes to achieve my ESOL endorsement through Manatee County.

I currently teach Social Studies at a Title I charter school in Bradenton, Fl (Oasis Middle School). I have been the lead teacher and curriculum developer for grades 6th-8th at the school since 2014. I am currently being trained for a leadership position at the school. My duties at the school not only include developing, teaching, and managing the curriculum for 6th-8th grades, but they also include managing a small and large number of students (120+ students during breakfast, lunch, events, parties, dismissal, school functions), developing interdisciplinary lessons that focus on reading and writing across different subjects, tutoring during lunch and after school for those students that request or need it through mentoring, planning school events, parties, and field trips, and participating in in-school and outside of school professional development programs.

I am an outstanding history tutor because not only am I well educated in history and American studies, but I have also been a teacher for two years in a middle school social studies classroom teaching civics, geography, American History, World history, and personal finance. Not only do I contain my temporary teaching certificate (valid until 2017), but I am progressing through professional development and graduate classes to obtain my professional certificate. Also, I am considered "Highly Qualified" by the state with a passing score on the Social Studies teaching examination for grades 6-8.

I encourage you to contact me if you have any questions or would like to learn more and schedule lessons! I am available in the evenings, some weekends, and during the summer! I am flexible in the subject matter being taught as well as the time and places you would ned to meet for a lesson. I would love to help you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

Earning American History Honors degree from Eckerd College in 2012, I continued on as the lead teacher of the Social Studies department focusing on World History, Civics, Economics, and specifically American Studies (as my personal favorite).

Classics

Majoring in History at Eckerd College with an A average, it was required of me to take several classes that involved the classics. I went above and beyond expected classes for the classes and took four extra classes, two of those led by Dr. Elie Wiesel and Dr. Carolyn Johnston that specifically focused on the classics and the relativity to today's literature and society.

Geography

Throughout teaching, I have focused several units on geography - focusing on landforms, landmarks, and maps. I also have an extensive knowledge of mapping and plotting charts on maps, specifically nautical maps, for attending Sea School and obtaining my OUPV 6 Pack from USCG.

Government & Politics

By teaching civics for two years and proving to raise student test scores by over 40% I am well educated in government and politics.

Handwriting

Working at a Title I charter school that specializes in at-risk children, the majority of students come to the school with poor handwriting. I have witnessed students who do not know how to write in cursive, do not know how to hold a pencil, and do not know how to write capital letters. Therefore, during breakfast, lunch, and during class when it is their time for personal tutoring (conferencing) I pull certain students to teach them handwriting skills. Especially with my ESE and ESOL students, I work with them to learn to write English properly and how to form sentences, paragraphs, and cursive.

Political Science

I am qualified to tutor political science because I have an intense background in civics and government. Throughout my teaching career, I have taught civics to my seventh grade students and a hybrid of American History and civics to my 6th students. Studying American History and History at Eckerd College and USF, I have also studied political science throughout history and have knowledge of how the discipline has transformed over the years. Lastly, both of my parents were involved in politics (House of Representatives, Council, County Clerk, numerous boards) since I was very young and this has given me first hand experience with our government, politics, data, and everything else that is involved with political science.

Public Speaking

As a teacher, I am well experienced with public speaking - rather that is in small groups or extremely large groups (over 120 students). Also, I assist students in preparing for public speaking at Oasis Middle School when they are required to give a presentation in front of the class, or for the students who have the honor in competing in essay contests that require them to read their essays to the public. I am also experienced as a public speaker because I am often asked to talk or lead professional development lessons. Lastly, during college I gained public speaking experience by defending my thesis in front of a large audience, leading classroom discussions, and teaching some college-leveled classes.

Social Studies

I am qualified to teach Social Studies because I hold a valid teaching certificate in the state of Florida to teach Social Studies grades 6-12. I have passed the state-approved test (FTCE) for Social Studies grades 6-12, and therefore I am considered highly qualified to teach Social Studies. I also have two degrees in history and American studies, and I have graduate coursework in history (MA currently on hold due to completing requirements for educational courses) - all that is left is my Master's thesis.

Study Skills

As a teacher at a Title I charter school that caters to at-risk student populations, I often teach study skills within my lessons as a social studies teacher. The majority of my students that arrived in the 6th grade at Oasis Middle School have no study skills, so therefore before I teach a lesson I often teach them the study skill needed to accomplish the lesson and I provide them with the academic tools and strategies to access the material on their own. That way, when they are home completing homework, they know how to essentially teach themselves because I have provided the tools and strategies that are necessary for learning.
