About Karen

I believe understanding is the path to learning and I endeavor to help students in their journey. My peers describe me as soft spoken and patient. My teaching strategy includes compassion and encouragement; simultaneously, I am structured and clear with instructions. I believe in utilizing analogies to facilitate the learning process and keeping instruction based on the student’s personal experience. Knowledge should be fun and exciting.

I'm a biologist with a background in psychology. I have taught for FAU summer science institute and have taught undergraduate level Anatomy & Physiology lab courses. Primary school classrooms are familiar to me as well. I taught a college education lab for the early development of reading and math in primary education and my cognitive science bachelors gives me insight into learning development and styles. I have tutored for over two decades in math, science, English, reading and comprehension, and test prep. My professional background also equips me with the skills to help adults in basic computer use and intermediate level use of Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.

My hope is to share the strategies for my academic and professional success with anyone endeavoring to pursue an education (formal or otherwise). The exercise of studying can seem daunting, but the rewards harvested are always worth it.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have tutored extensively in algebra in the past two decades. Personally I have taken math courses up to linear algebra (a year beyond calculus) and have very strong math skills. Great Match! Excellent Tutor!

Karen was knowledgeable about the SSAT preparation process, subject areas, and testing tips. She was prepared and relate-able to my 14 year old daughter. Great match! Looking forward to the next session!
