I am a 40 year veteran teacher and English Department Head with experience in public and private schools. 90% of my AP students received a passing grade over a twenty-year period, earning them college credit. Since I wrote the curricula for my departments in private and public school, I was intimately aware of the necessary instruction to help students succeed in the classroom, on standardized tests and in college. The literary texts I chose for my English departments were those listed by the College Board and these comprised the titles for the reading lists for grades six through twelve. Likewise, my AP Language students received a solid foundation in rhetoric as reflected in their excellent test scores.
I love students and I love to see them succeed. My own children took my AP classes and were homeschooled by me for three years. This past year, having retired from full-time teaching, but unable to stop teaching, I taught two online classes: AP Literature and Composition and World Literature and Composition. My second "job" was as a tutor/director for Classical Conversations, Challenge 1, a very rigorous program. I also babysit for my grandchild, soon to be grandchildren and adore children of all ages.
I have well beyond a Master's degree because I will always be a student who loves learning and who loves to impart that learning. I have been a certified teacher in New Jersey, New York, Michigan, and in Florida for the past twenty-two years with certification through 2020. Not only have I taught for all these years, but I have been a workshop leader to enable other teachers to teach well. Years ago, I developed an individualized diagnostic writing program as the mirror skill to my Reading Specialist certification. My skills as an instructor in reading and writing form the foundation for my success in teaching. I have tutored students in test-taking skills for the SAT, ACT and AP exams. I have similarly imparted those skills to the teachers in my departments. The texts I chose and the curricula I developed produced excellent standardized test scores for my school.
Despite my academic tendencies, I am first and foremost a people-person. I am interested in the student first and recognize basic differences in how students learn. I can offer a variety of activities and suggestions using multiple modalities to provide a solid basis for any learner to experience success.
I would love to hear from you regarding your needs as a student. My commitment is to provide general diagnosis to identify problem areas and skill work to improve them. Whether your need to is raise your scores on a standardized test or to complete an essay or a research paper properly, or simply to improve your understanding and grades in a course, I can help. We can meet in a convenient place like a library or coffee shop or even at my home, after I get to know you. And even though I require twenty-four notice for cancellation of sessions, I can be somewhat flexible recognizing that emergencies happen.
