I have been an educator for 44 years. I have taught elementary school math, middle school math and had been a math coach for Pinellas County prior to my retirement last year. My belief has been that students can learn if they are supported in that endeavor. High expectations were the norm in my classroom. I used manipulatives and hands-on activities to develop concepts. Students who did not succeed the first time were given alternative instruction and assignments.

The same strategies I used in the classroom will be used in my approach to tutoring. My background in elementary education will help me find the knowledge gaps in the students I tutor. Addressing those gaps will help the student succeed both in the present and the future. I know that math can be frustrating at times, but working to find out where that frustration originates and how to overcome it is the key.

I currently have a teaching certificate for Elementary Education and grades 5-9. My teaching experience includes 32 years of teaching grades 3, 4, and 5. The majority of the time was spent with grade 5 teaching math, science, and social studies. I followed the practice of introducing concrete examples followed by pictorial representations and ending with the abstract solutions. For example, when teaching multiplication I would use concrete objects to form sets, then pictures of sets, followed by the algorithm itself. That would give the student an understanding of why multiplication worked the way it did and it was applicable to the understanding of division and operations with fractions.

I am certified to teach grades 5-9. Having taught both elementary and middle school math gives me an awareness of the source of a student's misunderstanding. It is often the gaps that the student brings to the class that cause the trouble. I have worked with at risk students who needed review before they could grasp the current concept.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

I am very familiar with the skills that are needed to be successful in Algebra. Trying to teach 8th grade students who were at risk helped me understand that concepts cannot be understood by simply going over the topic again in the same way. I have taught 4th and 5th grade math, as well as 8th grade Prealgebra, and have seen were the gaps are that need to be addressed. I believe that students who are having difficulty need to experience the concrete and pictorial aspects of concept before they can be expected to master the abstract.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

I've only had one sit down with him but he was clean shaved, respectable and polite when he arrived. While he was working with my child he was reassuring, patient and brilliant noticing the area she needed most work in. I can only hope he continues to amaze us.

Knowledgable and patient

Very patient and able to go step by step with each problem. And knowing where assistance is needed. We felt very comfortable.
