I am an ESL teacher with 25 years of extremely varied experience. I have taught adults, young adults and K-12, in the USA, and in England, Ireland, Belgium, Slovakia and Mexico. My students are motivated, engaged, autonomous learners who feel very comfortable with learning from their mistakes and taking risks with the language. I enjoy sharing my fascination with the English language, and love seeing my enthusiasm reflected in students' learning! My lessons are student-centered and student-driven, well-paced and never boring. I will always be flexible in my approach, depending on the needs of the learner, and I strive to stay up-to-date with new methods and technology in learning.
I hold high standards for myself and welcome and encourage feedback from my students. Feedback, positive or negative, is all important and helps influence how I teach. I am flexible with scheduling and only require a three-hour notice of cancellation, and I am happy to schedule make-up classes. I care deeply about the success and confidence of each one of my students, and I look forward so much to helping you achieve your own success! I have very wide ESL/ESOL/EFL teaching experience, which includes teaching classes and tutoring individuals in IELTS preparation.
Whilst each class that I teach is tailored to the needs of the students, my teaching is always based on improving the general English of each student, with consistent focus on wide-ranging authentic materials, transferable skills such as carefully planned writing for a specific audience, reading skills such as skimming and scanning, and improving study skills to promote student autonomy. I appreciate that IELTS is a high stake test requiring student familiarity with the format and timing of each section of the test. I am skilled at making my classes rigorous, with meaningful assessment, at the same time ensuring that students feel encouraged and motivated,and not overwhelmed.
