Oberlin College (B.A., English)
Suzuki Method of Violin (Graduate Coursework)
Traditional Violin (Graduate Coursework)
I hold a Bachelor's degree from Oberlin College, a liberal arts and music school in Ohio. I enjoy tutoring students of all ages in reading and writing, because I believe these skills are essential to get ahead in this fast paced world. My students will improve reading comprehension while gaining general knowledge. Learning new vocabulary words will expand the student's potential for successful job performance in the future. I would encourage the student to choose material that interests them, because they will be more motivated to work hard. I am an avid reader, and I want to share my enthusiasm!
I am also a violinist in two orchestras: the Pinellas Park Civic Orchestra (I'm the concertmaster), and the Suncoast Symphony Orchestra. I have taught violin lessons and groups for 25 years, to children as young as 4 years old. You're never too young or old to learn! I understand that the violin is one of the most difficult instruments, so I am patient and encouraging. Fundamentals are taught first, and new skills are added as the student is ready for them. For a very young child ages 4-5, I use the Suzuki method: teaching the pieces by ear, before teaching note reading. For ages 6 and up, I teach how to read music. I have high standards and expect diligent practice. Music soothes the savage beast, so why not soothe our own souls!
Over the years, I have been a pre-school teacher, a childcare giver and I am a mother of three. My oldest is working on her PhD, and the other two have graduated college and are working. I look forward to sharing my knowledge and skills. I have a lot to give! Hello,

Julie was great with my 6 year old, knowledgeable and extremely kind, very warm feeling from our first session, so glad we found her, looking forward to having her as our tutor!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
The area of "English" includes reading, analyzing and critiquing of American and English literature: non-fiction, plays, novels, poetry, etc. I encourage the student in reading for content, as well as increasing speed of reading.
My college courses at Oberlin included music. I teach note reading, including the clefs, key signatures, sharps, flats, note values, rhythms, and counting. I encourage all students to sing, believing that no one is really "tone deaf"; they just need to be taught!
I have tutored all ages in reading. Mainly, I work on focus and concentration. This leads to better reading comprehension, which leads to learning and enjoyment of the content.
I like to say that "I play for work, and my work is play" .. meaning I play the violin! Having started at age 7 with private lessons, I am quite advanced, and I love to teach what I love. I have training in the Suzuki method of teaching, plus I teach note reading at age 5. Over 25 years experience teaching all ages, from 4 through adult. It is my belief that not everyone can be a concert soloist, but everyone can love the violin.
In college I studied Latin, which gives me knowledge of word derivations. For example, the word "manuscript" comes from the Latin manus, meaning hand, plus scripto, meaning writing. I find it fascinating, and I love to convey that knowledge to the student, so he/she can expand his/her vocabulary.
Writing clearly and with the proper use of grammar, punctuation, etc., is important. I will teach students how to write effective, descriptive material for any purpose -- whether it's a school assignment, a letter, or a job application.
