I am a certified teacher with a masters degree and over twenty years of experience. It is my belief that all kids can learn and succeed. The tutoring process is about helping children to discover and unlock the ways which work best for them in each subject area. I believe this process involves working closely with you and your child’s teachers, obtaining important background information, and, most importantly, getting to know your child and his/her unique gifts. My strengths lie not only in my ability to translate academic work into a language that kids understand, but in making tutoring sessions productive, engaging, and fun.
I have taught all subject areas in the elementary grades. In addition, I have experience teaching English at the high school level. My training includes Singapore Mathematics, Harvard Project Zero – Teaching for Understanding, More Options for Results in Education, Primary International Baccalaureate training, Alternative Assessments, Kagan Strategies, and Drama-in-Education Strategies for Academic Success. I have also developed multi-age science units using New Generation Science Standards.
In addition to my academic teaching background, I am also a certified drama teacher and a musician. I can offer special package rates to include lessons in acting and/or percussion for your child if he/she has these interests along with the need for academic tutoring.
I look forward to hearing from you and helping your child build skills, mastery, and confidence.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have had undergraduate coursework in corrective reading and phonics in order to employ these skills for challenged readers. I have over eight years experience working with students who are reading below grade level using phonics for work on a daily basis which is integrated into the reading program. I have also had experience utilizing Read Live, a wonderful online program which helps with fluency, phonics, and comprehension.
As a teacher at both the elementary and high school level, I utilized my curriculum to teach study skills through mnemonic devices, organization skills through folder systems, and different forms of note-taking using pictures, flow-charts, and ways to make short cuts through the use of short hand symbols and the use of technology. I help students to look at time as something which can be organized and managed through practice and prioritizing activities which might compete for academic time at the end of the school day. I also teach students to plan for upcoming projects and activities through the use of a daily, weekly, and monthly calendar usually in the form of a planner. I also used online programs such as "Quizlet" to help students develop study cards for upcoming tests and "Renzulli" which is a wonderful online program for projects which involve research and preparation.
