About Daniel

Hello everyone! My name is Dan, and I really enjoy tutoring. Please keep reading to see if I can help you.

Here's what I offer:

- One-stop tutoring for the SAT and ACT. I can tutor all subjects on both major "college bound" tests. No need for different tutors for different subjects!

- Comprehensive tutoring for the GRE and GMAT. I can work with graduate school applicants on both the math and verbal portions of the respective entrance exams;

- Individually tailored lessons. I do not have a set program for everyone. Part of what you (or your child) deserve is individualized teaching that fits each student's needs and learning style;

- Flexible scheduling;

- A friendly, yet focused, teaching style;

- Substantial and detailed feedback after each lesson;

- Plus much, much more!

Now for some background. I graduated from the University of Miami (Go Canes!) and then received my law degree from the University of Florida in Gainesville. While at UF, I was a member of the Florida Law Review, worked as a teaching assistant for both Legal Research and Writing and Appellate Advocacy, and received the Book Award in White Collar Crime, given to the student with the highest grade in the class. I also served on Law Review's publication committee, which selects student works for publication in the Review.

After passing the Bar Exam in July 2006, I went to work in the litigation department of Holland & Knight right here in Tampa. Practicing law has been a great experience; however, my passion is teaching, and to that end, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to teach bankruptcy law to paralegal students in Madison, Wisconsin several years ago. I loved it, and even learned how to ice skate. Not bad for a Florida boy!

I am available to tutor Math and Reading for the SAT and ACT, the GRE, the GED, and the LSAT, as well as for nearly all the social sciences. Believe me, the sessions will not be boring! That's right, even economics can be interesting. At least give it a shot!

I have sat through more than my fair share of lectures, and I always appreciated an instructor with enthusiasm for his/her subject. I will do my best to bring a dynamic approach to whatever subject matter we study.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

The ACT English subsection combines elements of grammar, style, and reading comprehension. As such, it is often the least favorite of test-takers. However, there are repeat concepts and relatively simple strategies that can be employed to improve a student's score. Although it certainly takes practice, I have seen students improve their scores on this subsection by as many as 8-10 points!

ACT Math

I have worked with dozens of students on this subsection of the ACT, devoting hundreds of hours to learning how to teach the material. During that time, I have developed a method that is relatively easy to use and, with practice, almost certain to deliver substantial improvement. Furthermore, I can relate the ACT Math to the SAT Math while also drawing attention to the subtle distinctions between the two subsections, thus providing a head start to anyone who will be taking that test as well.

ACT Reading

The ACT Reading subsection is, in many ways, like all reading comprehension tests. However, the ACT reading test requires that students comprehend the material QUICKLY, as time is at a premium. To that end, I stress techniques for anticipating what questions will be asked, and how to process material rapidly. It takes practice, but nearly anyone can improve his or her score on the ACT Reading test!

ACT Science

The ACT Science subsection is often the most daunting section students face on the ACT. However, with practice, I have seen students achieve their most significant score improvement on this portion. The test requires very rapid processing of data, but the techniques that I use have proven successful with students at all levels of academic achievement.

Algebra 1

I am qualified to tutor in math up through SAT/ACT Math and Algebra 2. I also majored in math-intensive economics while at the University of Miami. In short, I believe in making math concepts more concrete, as I find many students struggle with the abstract nature of the subject.

American History

I earned my B.A. in History from the University of Miami, with a concentration in American History, in 2002. I find the subject fascinating and infinitely rewarding to study. I believe students who are uninterested in the subject often view it as merely a collection of facts with little to no relevance to their lives. I make every effort to relate historical events to broader themes that they are likely to understand.

Bar Exam

I passed the Florida Bar Exam in 2006 on my first attempt, scoring in the 90th percentile of test-takers for that year. I am very familiar with the Bar subjects through both my practice prior to taking the exam, and my years as an attorney. Finally, I have some good test-taking tips that are particularly applicable to the Bar Exam.

Baseball

I played four years of high school baseball, including as a member of the 1997 state champion Barron Collier Cougars (Class 4A, Florida). I also coached Little League baseball for two years. I am an avid fan of the sport and am very well-versed in the game's history, rules, and statistics.

Chess

I have been an avid chess player since I was 6 years old. I am familiar not only with basic rules and piece capabilities, but also more advanced strategies, including anticipating how the board will develop several moves ahead. Perhaps most importantly, I understand how the game can both improve cognitive abilities and also be, quite simply, fun!

Criminal Justice

I have been a member of the Florida Bar since 2006, and have participated in numerous criminal defense matters. I also received the highest grade in my White Collar Crime class in law school.

Economics

I was an economics major in college and carried a 3.95 GPA in the subject at the University of Miami. I can help with beginner, intermediate, and advanced topics. Please do not hesitate to contact me to find out more!

Fitness

I have worked out since I was 14 years old at least 3 times per week. I coached baseball and played football and baseball in high school. I am an avid reader of fitness magazines and understand the basics of training, nutrition, rest, and recovery.

Football

I was a three year Varsity letter-man at a 5A high school in Florida. I played both offense and defense and thus have a solid foundation of knowledge of the fundamentals of the game on both sides of the ball. Additionally, I understand blocking schemes, pass protections, route combinations, defensive fronts, blitz packages, and more. I have been an avid fan for 25 years and have studied the development of sophisticated spread offenses and simple zone running attacks, as well as defensive zone-blitz schemes and other advances in defensive theory.

Geometry

I believe students become more receptive to Geometry when it is made less abstract. By using drawings and illustrations, a tutor can trigger a student's intuitive sense of geometric figures, which helps substantially. Finally, I like to illustrate how geometry can be used to make calculations in areas as diverse as engineering and sports. This makes the material more accessible.

Law

I have been a practicing attorney for going on 7 years. I have handled cases in areas of law ranging from criminal defense to neighborhood zoning disputes to business transactions. Prior to becoming an attorney, I earned my J.D. from the University of Florida.

LSAT

I scored a 162 (88th percentile) on the Fall 2002 LSAT. More important than my score, I understand the purpose of the LSAT, and how the abilities tested by it translate in to practice. This helps me explain to students a method for approaching the test. I also know the difficulties many LSAT test-takers have when they first confront logic games. I enjoy giving students the tools they need to tackle the logic games portion and the LSAT as a whole!

Public Speaking

During my time as an attorney, I have argued numerous motions in open court, frequently in front of other attorneys. I also conducted the oral argument as a teaching assistant in Appellate Advocacy, where I had to defend my position against a panel of judges in front of 50 fellow law students.

One fun example of my public speaking experience was the honor of giving the Best Man speech at my brother's wedding with 250 guests in attendance.

Also, lecturing on bankruptcy law twice a week to paralegal students further prepared me for public speaking engagements.

SAT Math

I have worked with dozens of students on this subsection of the SAT, devoting hundreds of hours to learning how to deliver the material. I have developed a method that delivers consistent results, as attested to by my reviews. Furthermore, students of nearly any level can gain additional points by learning some strategies in addition to the concepts that I teach.

SAT Reading

The SAT Reading test requires careful analysis, performed under timed conditions. Keeping these two points in mind, I teach students how to read quickly but effectively, and to thereby find textual support for their answers. I also explain how to recognize common elements of wrong answers on the SAT Reading, thus increasing their ability to use process of elimination and their comfort level with the test in general.

TEAS

I have over 200 hours experience on Wyzant preparing students for standardized tests such as the ACT, SAT, GRE and LSAT. Furthermore, I am familiar with the subject matter tested by the TEAS specifically through my teaching experience, my study of other standardized tests, and my educational background generally. Additionally, I have reviewed the specifics of the TEAS in order to further my understanding of the material and the test structure.
