About Bridgette

I am a published author, speech therapist (SLPA) and educator with 20+ years experience. Specializing in language based remediation, I have extensive experience working with reading disorders, dyslexia, dysgraphia, poor spelling, handwriting, auditory processing disorder, AD/HD, as well as Special Needs.

My published reading program has been proven effective in a clinical setting (Speech Center) with hundreds of students as well as in private tutoring. My program consists of assessing reading deficits, creating an individual reading plan that focuses on the students immediate needs, whether they be fluency, vocabulary, phonemic awareness, phonics, comprehension, attention and focus, brain processing, writing, spelling, letter reversals, auditory processing, etc. Incorporating Cognitive Learning Skills into my sessions speeds the students' progress.

Most students show 2-3 reading levels of progress in less than 3 months of tutoring. Students who were failing become A students in short time.

Here's a clip from an email I received from Tammy S. "We just finished the school year in 3rd grade. They both made high honor roll for the entire school year! In addition to having straight A's all year they both did well on the CRCT and got the highest score for math, science and Reading! I just wanted to take a moment to share this with you. Last year at this time you provided me with hope when I was in such despair and now I am filled with joy and pride with the accomplishments above and beyond my hopes! Thank you for your support and guidance. You have touched all of our lives in such an instrumental way. Never doubt the talent and gift you have and the precious gift you have given us!"

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

As a licensed Speech Therapist, I served many ADD/ADHD clients. Using Paced Auditory Serial Attention Tasks, I was able to help families avoid medicating their children or lower their medications. This also made all other interventions, such as academic, more effective. I have multiple certifications in Temporal Processing and Advanced Pediatric Temporal Processing. I have raving reviews from parents of ADHD children.

As a licensed Speech Therapist I worked effectively with pediatric Aspergers clients, correcting social impairments, communication difficulties and motor coordination issues.

As a licensed Speech Therapist, my work with autistic children ranged from preschoolers to adults. (Diagnosis can't be made prior to 3 yrs of age.) Using techniques such as Applied Behavioral Analysis and Temporal Processing techniques, my autistic clients were able to overcome many common autistic behaviors. I have several reviews online from parents of autistic clients.

As the Therapy Manager of an SLP office, I researched, developed and implemented an effective Orton Gillingham based dyslexia program used in speech and language therapy offices today. The program incorporates the principals of brain plasticity, reconnecting of brain synapses through whole body movement focusing on directionality exercises and games. Then I use an Orton Gillingham influenced multi-sensory explicit and systematic phonics program for phonemic awareness, spelling and reading. This program goes from basic phonemic awareness through high school level reading (Greek and Latin roots). Handwriting is done through systematic progression. Each and every dyslexic student is unique and therefore every student's program is based solely on their specific needs.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a degree in Early Childhood Education and have been teaching not only children but their teachers as well. As a Continuing Education faculty member of Dalton State College, I taught teachers (preschool, aftercare, day care, etc.) about learning styles, educational environments, kinesthetic learning, educational games, etc. As a speech therapist I have experience tutoring from preschool through college level in all subject areas using hands-on multi-sensory techniques. These techniques are useful for all students, but especially ADHD and LD students.

I have taught grammar from the early childhood level to high school, in public, private and home schools. I like to keep it fun and as simple as possible using programs like Easy Grammar and Daily Grams. Even Mad Libs are a fun way to introduce simple grammar. After the student grasps the general concept of grammar, then we move into more detailed grammatical structure.

I am quite proficient in several phonics programs, specifically Orton Gillingham based phonics programs. As an Early Childhood Specialist and pediatric speech therapist, I have used a systematic phonics program with all my students. I have experience using Recipe for Reading, Barton Reading, Hi Hat, as well as other phonics programs. Since my specialization is dyslexia, the ability to properly teach and demonstrate phonics in a memorable way is necessary. With my training as a speech therapist, I am able to accurately produce each phoneme for reproduction by the student.

As a Speech Therapist I taught remedial reading every day with over 140 pediatric patients, from first grade through high school. I have used most phonics programs, but I have learned that Orton Gillingham methods are the most effective. I use Recipe for Reading and The Barton Reading and Spelling System. These go through high school level reading. I will "review progress" regularly using Benchmarks and move a student through the developmental levels as quickly as they grasp a lesson. My goal is successful, energized readers!

I have taught vocabulary at every level from babies to adults. With a degree in Early Childhood Education I taught both a class full of children as well as their teachers. I believe the key is immersion, just like in learning a foreign language. The child must see, hear and be engaged with words every day. The age of the child would determine how I would teach vocabulary now; games for younger children, Greek and Latin roots for older children.

Very Thorough — Bridgette was engaging with her tutoring. My son was very skeptical of the process. However, by the end of the session, he said, "She was really nice even though we had to do a bunch of testing". Her evaluation was very thorough and a great deal of time was spent in preparation. She is very knowledgeable and utilizes many different techniques in her approach to tutoring. I feel blessed that we fou ...
