About Betsy

How I’ll tutor:

I can help you read and write: I will use phonics as part of helping you read. I can help you love to read. I have a creative writing Bachelors degree. I've taught workshops over the years, geared toward the individual.

Everyone learns differently. I will listen to you. I can help you find your personal keys to catching on to your subject matter. We will be efficient about your mastering your subject and I can help make it interesting and help your subject relate to your every day life. That way your learning with me should “stick”. I can help you if you are just a beginner in your subject, if you have studied for a while but just can’t grasp some aspect of it, and I can help you if you are quite advanced in my areas of highest expertise. I am patient and I have a sense of humor.

See below specifically for ENGLISH, MICROSOFT WORD, ART

My areas are diverse: ENGLISH usage: composition, reports, term papers, creative writing, screenplay composition; business writing; Microsoft applications: Microsoft Word, with some Excel and PowerPoint; Visual Art: beginning drawing, advanced drawing, watercolor (beginning and intermediate); beginning oil, hand building in ceramics (greenware technique, glazes and firing).

My Background:

English/Writing/Creative Writing
I scored 96 points on my SAT English and had similar scores on LSAT tests. I have a creative writing BA from Hunter College, New York, NY for which I studied English and American literature, fiction and non-fiction expository writing, poetry and screenplay writing. I took McKey’s famous “Story” workshop. I’ve written (unpublished) 2 novels, 1 screenplay, several books of poetry and have published a few short stories and poems. On the job in the law firm, for many years I have written letters using what you would call business English and can teach you to sharpen your sentences, paragraphs and to create air tight, logical and interesting letters, reports or other documents.
I have spent 3 years facilitating a senior citizen writing group and we have produced our first volume of collected writing (fiction and poetry). I also held a workshop for memoir writers who were working in book length format, who intend to publish.

I will help extensively with memoir writing and long writing projects.
I can help you with speeches.

Microsoft Word
I worked for several years in a New York City law firm as a legal assistant and word processor. I scanned (OCR) large and complex documents, then styled and formatted them. I proof read, corrected, added tables, changed tables, created merge letters, and have experience in advanced Microsoft Word. I can teach you not only basics, but can give tips and moves that will help you improve your speed.

Excel and PowerPoint
I have worked in each of these programs, especially Excel, at non-advanced levels and can help with the basics, including Excel formulas.

I have an MFA in visual art. In the visual arts, I will find your strengths and emphasize your use of skills I can show you and I will spend time to explain any theory I feel will help you see your work more clearly and to deepen your style and improve your finished work. I have experience in and will tutor you in learning areas of drawing, creative watercolor, oils, photography, and ceramic sculpture (handbuilding and firing).

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have been drawing since I was 3 years old, was first tutored by my older art student sister at 8 years old, began first art classes at age 14 and have never stopped. I have a BA in studio art and an MFA in 3D (sculpture - emphasis ceramics). Over the years I have held workshops in drawing with 2 to 6 students and sometimes I've taught one on one. I will work with beginners who can show me some attempts and explain their interests. I have one technique that helps people move from drawing stick figures to quickly drawing more complete human forms with a lot of dimension and detail. I will also walk beginners through simple object studies where we work with shading and light and dimension. If your goal is to have a finished drawing, yours will have a full background and should be suitable for a frame.

I will be interested in teaching you if you are 14 years old or over 90. At 14 and older you have a strong, clear view of the world and I will not only show you drawing techniques, such as teaching you to use your eyes and how to measure, but I will work with your sense of style and the importance of subject matter. We will not learn "how to draw a house or flower" but we will put that house or flower on the page in an interesting way. You will learn something about perspective, a lot about shading and edges and how what your pen does has more to do with what lines and shapes are around or contained in your house or flower than what someone might outline as a typical house or flower. I would like you to see and your hand will bring out your own particular drawing style. We could explore drawing withcharcoal and white chalk, number 2 pencils, paper mate pens, and formal pen and ink. If you need to have a particular subject complete by a certain date, we will concentrate solely on that project. I can look at what you have begun and we can improve it and bring your work up a level or two. If you have any other specific drawing need, it's possible I am the tutor for you.

If you are advanced but having particular problems in some area such as working with perspective properly in landscape buildings, or if you would like to begin serious work on portraits, I can offer techniques that will get you started on new work and that may salvage other work you have started in the past.

I have a degree in creative writing, have scored always above 95% on English testing scores for college level testing. I've taught writing skills to adults both young and elderly, which includes grammar, comprehension, composition, and other writing and reading considerations. My students have usually said they have a lot of fun learning with me. I encourage writing and keeping a journal as a study and practice to improve answering essay questions, remembering a subject better and to explore actual application for the students. I've put out collective books at times when holding workshops, which has made a exciting focus for students knowing their work will be in printed form.

I have an BA and MFA in studio art and I have been painting (oil and watercolor). For both watercolor and oil classes, I will work with students who already know how to draw enough to create the shapes and composition. I can help improve the drawing techniques used in brushing. For beginners, I use a color wheel and I help you with an 8 color pallet to start. I'll teach you about color mixing so you understand hue and saturation (how dark or how deep your colors can be. I've painted traditional still life, portraits and landscapes in both watercolor and oil, and my latest work includes large scale water colors (8 feet wide on average) and also many smaller pieces. I use and like wet on wet and combinations of this to achieve fine lines and the disappearance of line differences. This means I can show you some softening techniques. I will show you dry brush if and when it would be useful to your painting. I emphasize composition and will help an untrained eye understand how to use the entire page well and how to plan that page to keep proportions tightly to your planned work. If you are working on a piece you are having trouble with for any reason, I can help you discover what needs to be added or altered to improve the outcome or to meet your vision. During the process, I will give you appropriate tips and information, theory and examples to help you achieve your best.

I have a BA and masters in fine arts. This is where I studied photography. For a while I did specialized portrait photography (my own fine arts composition with the subject) and I've always photographed my own art work for pamphlets and web, having been guided in this by one of my professors who understood never to include shadows, etc. I did a small bit of photography for her text book (The Craft and Art of Clay, Susan Peterson, first edition), as well as editing the portfolio section. Each camera is different but in this day and age, cameras can do just about anything. I can help you with your particular camera as long as you have your instruction book for the not obvious technical things. I can certainly help you understand what you want that camera to do--from using macros for tiny detail, focus, to wide angle, composition (including considering the use of color for the best image). In general, simpler is more striking, and contrasts and repetitions of subtle details are elements to add surprise.

I have a creative writing BA degree, have published short stories and poetry and have held many workshops over the years. I have helped establish a college literary journal of which I was editor and I have helped one of my workshops produce their own self-published collection of stories and poems. I have high marks on all college testing scores particularly in English composition and grammar.
