Hello! I am interested in being your tutor because I love to teach and share information about the things I love and know about. I have been in love with Art since I was a small girl; my mother was a part time artist; and I learned to paint at only 8 years old in oil. I cannot even remember when I first started drawing; it's been my entire life I think. I have been a teacher of art since I got my first degrees; the BFA and the MFA; in different settings; college level as an adjunct and Visiting Artist; and TA (teaching assistant); and I have also taught Elder Hostel students; adult learners in Extention college courses; and little Chinese children for the Chinese Academy here in Florida.
I also am a horsewoman and have been riding and exhibiting horses since childhood; and I have done a great deal of teaching riding and horse care and handling; and that has contributed to my teaching skills; as all teaching is similar - it is about conveying information in a way that makes the listener understand it and get excited about it too!
I love to write and convey information this way as well; and though I was never an English Major; I enjoy "talking" on paper or screen; and have written articles for Art magazines; horse publications; and personal projects; read constantly and enjoy helping people in reading comprehension and basic grammar; etc.
Finally I am a lover of nature who has also lived in the biggest cities on the East Coast; as well as in Vermont and Massachusetts and now Florida, where I live and care for horses and my dogs and garden.
I love to gather and convey information in the form of reading and writing. I enjoy communicate both in person and with the printed word; and I love to share, dissect and disseminate revelations; understandings; and discoveries about books articles or any texts in any media. I have edited publications for fellow artists about their artwork and exhibits; written critiques that have been published in Art Journals; and I have curated art shows, with the attendant curators statements; and catalog reviews.
I have been an artist since I was a small child; and learned to oil paint as young as eight years old; with my mother; a Sunday painter. I grew up with the influence of the world's greatest artists; with my well worn copy of Jansen's History of Art - a celebrated compilation that I used as inspiration for my own creations . I had no idea that what I was doing was a time honored absorption of lineage from cave art to the classical Western masterpieces and into what was then Modern Art.
I have a BFA from Tufts University where I completed my academic requirements for the degree in conjunction with my work done for the studio diploma at School of the Museum of Fine Arts; an institution associated with and right next to the Boston Museum of Fine Art. I studied Painting; Photography; and Art history and theory; and minored in French Literature.
For my MFA, I attended The University at Albany, where I concentrated on Painting and completed my studies with the Presidential Award for the entire SUNY system for that year, as well as smaller awards given for studio work and the largest cash prize given in the area for the most prestigious art show and competition.
While in graduate school I held positions as a TA in basic and advanced and figure drawing; and at a local college; where I was an adjunct professor in drawing and painting. I was also a Visiting Artist at a mid western college immediately after graduation and held a few other adjunct positions here and there in the years following my graduation.
I lived and worked in NYC for ten years prior to moving to Florida; and kept a large studio with my husband; an Internationally known Chinese artist; in Williamsburg Brooklyn. We curated and showed art in the city and other countries; alone and together at times; and I worked as a gallery attendant; and curator at different locations in the city; and co-curator with my husband a few times; as well as in Belfast Ireland with an Irish artist.
I now live in St. Augustine; where I focus mostly on drawing; and do some commission portrait work; but have begun painting again; since moving to the country where I have a suitable work space.
I am a very passionate artist and sometimes writer; and love to share my love and enthusiasm for both with others. I am mature; and experienced; have had a lot of life experience to teach me about how to make particular decisions and take appropriate directions towards the things I love for success in those fields. I love all students and get great satisfaction when I see them light up from those moments of understanding; pride in their work; and a sense of accomplishment that comes from learning and loving something new. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
