About Cara Marie

I've been tutoring high school, college students and adult life-long learners for the past 10 years, in a variety of math and science subjects. In college, I was a math major and I've continued to successfully tutor students in everything from Algebra I to Calculus I, II, Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra and Differential Equations. For math majors looking for extra help, advanced math is also one of my specialties.

I also have a PhD in biochemistry. I've taught in a classroom setting Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry. I've also been tutoring other aspects of the physical sciences, including college level Physics I and II, General Biology 1 and 2, Physiology, as well as Organic Chemistry I and II and Biochemistry. College students studying advanced science--I'm the tutor for you.

One of my greatest strengths is tutoring for the MCAT, which combines all aspects of the biochemical and physical sciences. I've also helped high school students achieve success in Biology, Physics, and Chemistry, at all levels - from regular track to 4's and 5's on the AP exams. I work individually with each student to identify their problem areas and to address their specific needs.

I enjoy working with students and find great pleasure in seeing my students succeed. I'm patient and am skilled at explaining ideas and concepts in multiple ways to accommodate the needs of the students. I have a laid back demeanor, and I try to make studying science and math as stress-free and enjoyable and enjoyable. I will always answer your calls and texts, and I'm great at responding to emergency "My problem set is due tomorrow?!?!" or "I have a test when?!" situations.

I'm always happy to provide references from the parents of previous students if you'd like them.

If you have any questions at all, or are interested in working with me, please don't hesitate to email!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I've worked with multiple students on all aspects of ACT prep, but I specialize in the math section.

I review each of the critical topics covered by the ACT math section and give students as many practice problems as they would like! I also make sure that students know how to think critically about each question while maintaining good test-taking time management.

Algebra 2

I routinely work with high school students taking Algebra II. I do my best to make algebra fun and non-threatening. I try to present the material in a manner that is understandable. I'm very patient - if a student doesn't understand one way that I explain material, I'll find another. We'll work problems together and go through each concept step-by-step.

Biochemistry is my specialty. My PhD is in biochemistry, and I've well-versed and trained in the subject. I take great pride in my ability to break down very difficult biochemical concepts into manageable material. With biochemistry students, my job is to take the extraordinary amount of detail professors throw at you, and turn it into an understandable package of material. I am great at working with concepts, but I also can help you work through your problem sets, even difficult ones. I'm not intimidated by even the most difficult problems! My goal is to make biochemistry a fun and enjoyable experience.

For more info on how I approach biochemistry, see Oly's feedback on my feedback page.

Calculus is one of my specialties. As silly as it sounds, I really enjoyed taking calculus in high school and college. I love tutoring it now. I routinely work with high school students taking Calculus AB and BC and college students taking Calculus I, II and higher calculus classes, including Multivariable Calculus and Analytical Calculus (proof-based calculus for math majors).

Chemistry is one of my favorite subjects to tutor. I've worked with high school chemistry students on a variety of levels (standard chemistry, honors chemistry and AP chemistry), and for college students, I can help with General Chemistry, and any upper level Chemistry class, including Organic, Analytical and Physical Chemistry.

Differential Equations

As a math major, I've taken formal courses in both ordinary differential equations (ODE) and partial differential equation (PDE). I've tutored both courses at the college level.

As a biology major and as a biochemist, I've taken formal courses in Genetics at both the undergrad and graduate level. I've TAed undergraduate genetics and I've successfully tutored undergrad genetics multiple times. Check out my genetics "Answers" on the WyzAnt Answers page!

Linear Algebra

I majored in math, and my favorite class by far was linear algebra. I was a teaching assistant for a linear algebra class, and have done private tutoring with a linear algebra student. I have experience with matrix addition and multiplication, matrix inversion, and finding determinants, and proofs with linear algebra theorems. I am also skilled with eigenvalues, eigenvectors and eigenspaces.

MCAT is hands, down, the subject that I tutor most frequently. I target the test-taking and scientific analysis skills required to succeed on the MCAT through a mix of problems, scientific literature and passage analysis. I am well-versed in teaching any of the sciences covered on the exam - General chemistry, Organic chemistry, Biochemistry, Physics and Biology.

I also run a daily MCAT group that is designed to target the highest yield topics on the MCAT. Each group session is 30 mins long, online and recorded so that students can review the video at their convenience; the teaching is interactive and students can ask questions during the mini-lecture. In addition, to cover the psychology/sociology portion of the exam and the CARS section of the exam, I've partnered with two amazing tutors who teach group sessions on Psych/Soc material and the CARS material covered by the MCAT. The links to their profiles are:

Will (CARS):

Caramy (Psychology/Sociology):

During group, we are constantly reviewing high yield MCAT material and teaching in the way the AAMC tests the topics. We often have more than 2-3 MCAT topics being covered each day in group and sessions are unlimited. All of the study materials you need are also provided, including textbooks, practice problems, review books and practice passages.

I also do one-on-one tutoring for the Chem/Phys and Bio/Biochem portions of the exam, but the group is designed to be affordable ($100/month), personalized and a great way to keep MCAT material fresh until your test day!

Organic Chemistry

Organic chemistry is another one of my specialties. I was an organic chemistry teaching assistant (which included one hour per week of teaching it in a classroom to college undergraduates) for multiple years. I'm skilled with both organic chemistry 1 and 2.

I take great pride in my ability to break down very difficult organic reactions into the basic concepts. With organic students, I try to take all of the reactions, and abstract the general principles so that students can understand any reaction they're given. Organic chemistry does not have to be awful! My goal is to make it a fun and enjoyable experience.

For more info on how I approach organic chemistry, see Kim's feedback on my feedback page.

I've helped many high school (regular track and AP Physics) and college students (Physics I and II) through their problems with physics. I'm very well versed in both algebra-based and calculus-based physics, and being a math major, I'm not afraid to help you tackle difficult problems!

I can absolutely help you proofread and edit your papers (high school, college and graduate) and college application essays. I look at papers for content, grammar, punctuation, word choice and structure.

For topics that I'm familiar with (literature, English, any of the sciences), I can help construct the arguments and analyze the flow and structure of the overlying argument.

I have worked with multiple TEAS students, all with great success. I'm great at explaining the basic concepts of the test in multiple ways, so students can fully grasp the concepts. I can help with all aspects of the test - the math, English, science and reading.

I know the ins-and-outs of trigonometry, from right triangle trigonometry to the trigonometry of obtuse and acute triangles. I'm also fluent in trigonometric identities and can teach you the properties and graphs of the 6 trigonometric functions.

I have a lot of experience working on papers with students. I can help students with conceptualizing arguments, structuring their papers, editing and proofreading.

I absolutely love helping students with their college application essays. I help you rbing out your creativity, I'll go through multiple drafts with you and I'll help ensure that they're perfect before you turn them in to your colleges of choice.

Something every MCAT student should be aware of! Best MCAT Review you can find, hands down

Cara Marie has easily been the best science tutor I have had, period. The group sessions she runs with two other tutors are incredibly affordable, and the low stress environment she creates makes students comfortable. The short, 30-minute lectures are perfect. You'll be able to ask questions during these live sessions, and CM is especially great at answering even the weirdest of questions. With pe
