About Marina

Dear prospective student/parent,

My best professors exuded admiration for the topic they discussed. As someone who craves new knowledge, I hope to instill my passion for learning and teaching onto my students. I believe that everyone holds a lock on understanding of the desired topic, but a good teacher should patiently guide the student to find the fitting key to unlock a new world, or at least a peace of mind. I try to have my tutees gain the confidence in their learning skills. I myself gained those skills by hard work, especially overcoming the challenges of studying in a new language. (I have moved here from Ukraine and worked triple for continuous high honors.) For that reason, I treat my students as an equal.

Math and science makes me happy, so I entered college as a double major in Mathematics and Biochemistry. To my instructor's surprise and admiration, I took my first college course (statistics) when I was 14 and can relate to current teens trying to get ahead. I have since finished my bachelor’s degree. When not engaged in the sciences, I look for peace in artistic endeavors. I am also a published author (and lecturer), an artist, and a professional copyeditor, and volunteer as a reader to growing minds of four-year-olds and as a testing proctor, for both of which I had completed a background check. While those hobbies do make me really happy, what makes me most happy is when I achieve a breakthrough in someone’s learning. Hearing someone with a sincere appreciative expression cry out “Thank you, thank you. That makes sense!” is why I do this.

I’m versatile in my tutoring style and have had two years of experience with small groups, whole classes, and one-on-one teaching, the majority of which I achieved as a college tutor at my university for a service called the Math Clinic. I have also taught students much older than I, and am comfortable in helping mature young learners. I try to bring my own miniboard with markers and other tools to make learning even more fun and versatile. Along with that, I hold patience, care, and assurance. I expect the student to bring the textbook, notes, and handouts for the tutoring sessions and to be engaged in my discussions. Because Russian is one of my native languages, I have also mentored students coming from Russian-speaking countries and have tutored Americans in the Russian language. I like to meet in public places, but I’m willing to consider online tutoring.

I realize that not everyone seeking tutoring is doing poorly in a subject. Some may desire extra practice or guidance in an effort to succeed, reflecting positively on the achiever, and I think it’s great, so I loosely refer to my teaching as a partnership.

You have taken the first step to success by looking for resources where you’ll get a deeper understanding. Thank you giving me your time in your search for a tutor. I look forward to work with your student!

Let’s conquer this together,

Marina

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Finite Math

As part of my tutoring job in college, I was assigned to lead tutoring sessions for a university Finite Math professor. Finite Math is like a fast-paced survey of the different branches of math, such as algebra, probability, linear algebra, geometry, and possibly trigonometry. Think of it as a math buffet, with a little bit of everything but not as "fancy" as "restaurant math."
