About Susan

Teaching/tutoring has been my primary goal since I was a child, teaching my neighborhood friends in a classroom setting on our screened big front porch.

After college graduation, my first teaching experiences were in Minnesota. I was lucky; getting to teach in the elementary school I attended as a child. I taught hands-on geography. Also, I tutored math and reading at another Minnesota school. One-on-one was great in that I could plan day to day what each student needed to excel. Tutoring over the years in Safety Harbor's Elementary school was primarily reading and composition.

I have a Bachelor of Science degree from Texas A & I University in Kingsville, Texas.

Another challenge was becoming a Certified Medical Assistant with CPR certification and current Hepatitis B vaccination.

Teaching/tutoring is my true calling. I look forward to working with people who are motivated to learn and those who lack confidence in their ability to learn.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

What happened when, why and what can we learn from that?

American History is full of such events and can explain much of what is happening now. Do we want to repeat the past?

Let's discuss the place in time you are studying: what makes it important, who was involved, what was the result?

You can appreciate American History - now!

Elementary (K-6th)

My other major was a specialty in K-6th. This involves knowledge of various subject matter and what is needed by the tutor/teacher to relate to the age of the students. Ultimately, what matters is what works for each student, while using a mainstream approach for the majority of the class. The teacher's optimism and enthusiasm must carry through with his/her knowledge base. It is important to make a connection with the students and the parents. The teacher/tutor understands what the student is learning in the class atmosphere and what is appropriate for homework. Keeping parents apprised of the student's strengths and weaknesses is one way to involve the parents in their child's progressive learning experience.

Macintosh

I use a Macintosh daily and have all of my adult life. I had my own graphic design business and published a monthly community newspaper for 19 years. As the years went by we kept up with system updates and Mac computer additions. Yes, desktop publishing became real publishing on several desks in multiple offices. All personnel were tutored in how the Macintosh works and how to integrate it into their particular duties. We were one of the first publications to use digital photography in tandem with the Mac. We also changed in how we printed to keep in step with the offset web printer.

RIP Steve Jobs. Macintosh was your first integrated computer with
CPU, keyboard and screen. Then on to iMacs, Mac towers and Mac laptops. Decades as a Mac aficionado!

Reading

Teaching/tutoring is my true calling. I look forward to working with people who are motivated to learn and those who lack confidence in their ability to learn.

Sewing

I sewed for many years, making my own clothing. It is uplifting wearing unique garments. Selection of a pattern, fabric and trims all contribute to the achievement of unique garments.

Speech

There are limited numbers of sounds that can be created when speaking. Awareness of these sounds can assist a person who may be speech impaired. This allows for regional dialects.

I studied this subject (speech pathology) toward my major in English.

Writing

Students can be creative when they write. What interests you? Would you like to write about it? You could share it with your family and friends. Sometimes a teacher will provide a topic for you and explain how to do it. Writing for school work and writing for yourself can both be enlightening experiences.

Topic....Topic sentence and supporting sentences

It seems so easy. But really, work is involved! :) If you want to begin to learn the skills of writing or want to improve your classwork writing, now is the time to start. Let us begin....
