About Donald

I have over 30 years experience teaching, including the courses listed below:

Physical Science, Chemistry, Physics, Algebra One, Geometry , Algebra Two.

Though I have not taught Calculus, I had the highest grade in my Calculus 1 college class of 105 students. If you can not find someone else to help, I can probably help you figure it out.

While I have had to teach without textbooks, I believe it is wise to closely follow the text in its entirety. I have found that major publishers hire experts that provide the latest (within a couple of years) best practice core teaching methods. I have found that students have more confidence when texts are used. I value the text as one of the best sources of the depth of knowledge needed to deal with current and future challenges.

Several years ago, I was one of ten teachers in the state of Arizona to help write the math portion of the Arizona Instrument for Measuring Standards (AIMS). In developing the test we relied heavily on a variety of textbooks from the major publishers. (But I have to add that ironically, I guess the publishers rely on the State Standards Testing.) Q:?)

My philosophy is to start where you are at - using that God Given Knowledge that lies within - and use manipulatives and guess and check discovery strategies to grow from there. You create and own what you learn.

Thank you for considering me as your high school math and physical science tutor.

Sincerely,

Donald

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have had several years of experience teaching Math 6, 7, 8, Algebra 1, Algebra 2. I have written math lesson plans around the the lessons taught in most texts such as Prentice Hall and Houghton Mifflin as well as the Common Core Standards. I have also taught 9-12 physical sciences including Chemistry and Physics, classes in which I have employed the use of mathematical skills learned in Algebra. I use motivational hands-on skills with cut-outs to make clear many of the most difficult concepts.
Finally I have written many math and science interactive computer programs which encourage students to use guess and check strategies to discover not only answers, but more importantly the concepts involved.
Please see my article "How To Orbit The Earth" published in the January, 1984 issue of The Science Teacher Magazine.

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 is my favorite subject to teach in high school. It was one of the more difficult subjects for me to learn and I can use my struggles to know what students are struggling with and help them. I enjoy the depth of knowledge required to understand Algebra 2. I have taught Algebra 2 for two years and have used Algebra 2 concepts in teaching Chemistry and Physics for many years.

Elementary Math

I have tutored students in Elementary Math for about 3 months. I discovered that students wanted to learn what I taught at the middle and high school level. I also discovered that by using manipulatives, some 5th graders who were having trouble with mathematics, learned some of the more difficult concepts that high school student still struggle with. I will be happy to show you how to discover some very important math concepts.

Physical Science

I have several years experience teaching physical science including Physics and Chemistry. I have written science lesson plans around the the lessons taught in most texts such as Prentice Hall and Houghton Mifflin as well as the Common Core Standards. I have also taught 6-12 mathematics and naturally integrate math in my science lessons when it is helpful in understanding concepts.

I have experience with teaching through the use of laboratory experiments so as to help students understand the science concepts involved. My article published in the January, 1984 issue of The Science Teacher Magazine is exemplary of this experience.

Prealgebra

I have two years experience teaching prealgebra. I employ several hands-on learning tools such as cups and tiles, distributive tiles, cut-outs of shapes for developing formulas, and dice for the prealgebra of probability and statistics. I enjoy using guess and check strategies to build formulas and bring out that math knowledge that lies within each and every person.
