I have been teaching at a Title I school teaching intensive reading to 9th graders. I have also taught English to 12th and 10th graders. I was able to bring my students up from an average 5th grade reading level to 9th grade reading level or higher last year. I have experience teaching autistic, EBD, and ADD/ADHD students using a variety of strategies that help students reach independence and ownership of their own learning.
I have experience teach Honors students, intensive level students, and saw vast improvement in even my highest and lowest students. I have immense rapport with my students and do not believe in a "one size fits all" lesson plan for my classes. I understand each child's needs and strengths and use those to fuel their learning. I do not hide my expectations or reasons for what I choose to teach because the child should have a part in the process too.
I do not believe in yelling or arguing with children because I understand the underlying reasons for such behavior. I try to bring in interests other than my own to make learning content relatable and interesting. Creativity is a must, but so is practice for state assessments. I have extreme patience and take student success and failure to heart. I constantly reflect on my own teaching and what I can do better next time.
