As a veteran teacher, I realize that math is often not a favorite subject of most students. My main goal as a tutor is to help the student see what their strengths already are in the subject and build off of those to work on the areas where they feel less confident. I see “smartness” in math a bit differently; there are many ways to be smart in mathematics including but not limited to: asking good questions, knowing where you are stuck or confused, thinking deeply and logically about how to approach a problem, and being able to solve problems in more than one way. As a tutor I can help the student work on all of these and become a confident and well-rounded math learner.
I also remind my students that being smart at math does not always mean arriving at the answer the fastest; some of the most intelligent people are slow, deliberate and very deep thinkers. Math is complicated and it takes time to figure out how it all comes together. Included in this learning process is the recognition of the value in what can be learned from our mistakes, and to not fear making them. I was fortunate to recently take a professional development course taught by one of my former Stanford University professors where we discussed how the brain works and how students learn math effectively. In that course I was taught how important mistakes are for the brain (Growth Mindset). When we make mistakes that means our brain is about to make a connection and we actually become better at the task at hand. As a tutor we will celebrate mistakes during the learning process and not try to hide or cover them up as we learn and grow from them. I like to have students thereby come to a deeper understanding of the material so that they can then apply that knowledge in a new situation; this is an especially important skill to have within the new set of state-wide math standards in Florida. I love thinking about new ways to solve and approach math and love working with students to help them realize their potential.
Regarding my past education and professional background, I have a B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Florida and a M.S. in Mathematics Education from Stanford University. I have taught in a variety of states and schools and hold a current Florida teaching certificate. I taught Algebra 1 and 2 in the state of California for 3 years. I also taught Algebra 1, Algebra 2 and Geometry in the states of Georgia and Florida. I most recently worked with Florida Virtual School as a Geometry instructor.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
