About James

Mr. C. has many years' experience teaching and tutoring. He is qualified to tutor a wide range of subjects. He is particularly skilled with respect to computers. He has tutored math at many levels. He has taught English - including reading, writing, and interpretation of literature. He earned an Award of Excellence on the Praxis exam used in many states to evaluate teachers. He speaks and writes German best of all. He has some knowledge of French and Italian plus basic knowledge of some other languages.

His tutoring style derives in no small part from his work in graduate school that included cognitive and behavioral psychology, that is, the study of learning. One of his great skills is his ability to modify his teaching to fit the particular needs of the student. If one method does not seem to work, he will try another method. He is also skilled at using the Socratic Method if that is more effective. This method involves answering student questions by using questions to determine why the student does not understand some concept.

As you can see, he has passed the qualifying tests in many subjects. Standardized test scores support that he is well-rounded - GRE Verbal 720 and Math 740, LSAT 727. His teaching style involves drawing from various sources to devise the most effective means of aiding the student to learn not only the specific material but also how to learn in the future.

Certified in both Math 6-12 and English 6-12 plus Computer Science by Florida Department of Education.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
