I have 20 years experience in mentoring and teaching of laboratory personnel in laboratories around the world. I started out working with the very brightest at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, and have taught courses at Aristotle University in Greece, University of Budapest.
Penn State, Woods Hole, and many other educational institutions around the world. I have taught courses in chemistry, physics, math, and biology. I have worked with scientific notables such as Edward Teller, Watson and Crick, Linus Pauling, and others. My main interests are
x-ray diffraction, crystallography, charged particle microscopy, and light microscopy.
I believe my main contributions to science are developing synthetic bone for replacement of skeletal components, developing an x-ray sensitive array detection system for electronic imaging radiographs, nuclear weapons support, and improve recovery in extractive metallurgy.
My most rewarding participation is in the area of sharing my knowledge of science with aspiring scientist. I have a great deal of excitement to share with new people in the field and my goal is to inspire them to move along the challenge they are undertaking.
During my education life, my greatest problem was finding some identification of the significance of a particular subject such as group theory, and other forms of mathematics. Other than being a bunch of calculations found lifeless in some math text, I found little inspiration in the material. This is true of other subjects such as chemistry, physics, and biological sciences, which I was being exposed to. I was a very good student, even with a lack of context. It was only when I began to work with some of the notables mentioned above that I began to realize some texture and continuity to the disciplines and experience some of the excitement of finding new details of science.
I recall a discussion with Watson and Crick regarding the epiphany of realization that DNA formed a double helix, and later on working with Pauling and realizing the significance of quantum tunneling. I can report that these realizations of knowledge are superior to winning a Super Bowl! I hope to share this excitement with people I mentor.
