About Nancy

I'm a working journalist who has a B.A. in Journalism. I have worked as a reporter, newspaper editor and online financial news writer in New York City. I currently write for a magazine. If a student from K-8 needs to strengthen his or her language arts skills, I can help. I taught my daughter to read when she was 3, as she didn't attend pre-school before Kindergarten. By the time she entered Kindergarten she was way ahead of her class.

I have tutored elementary school children in Los Angeles as part of a volunteer program. Although I tutored first and third graders in all subjects in CA, my strong points are English, literature, spelling, grammar, writing and reading, and I would be able to tutor at the middle school or high school level in these subjects only, as well as the lower grades.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked as a volunteer tutor at a Los Angeles charter public school, quizzing first- and third-graders on all their subjects - reading, English, spelling, social studies, math and science. I am a Journalism major (B.A.) and my language arts skills are particularly strong. I am also a stickler for grammar and correct English usage. It was rewarding to work with the children in L.A. as English was their second language (Spanish was their primary language). I helped to prepare them for tests and hone their English language skills.

English

I have a B.A. degree in Journalism.

Reading

I tutored first graders when I volunteered at Sierra Park Elementary School in Los Angeles a decade ago, I taught my own daughter to read when she was 3, using a unique reading kit of that era, called SRA. She excelled in language all through school and college and, like me, is an avid reader.
